Shouldn't be too hard to find, given it's linked on the main 5s page.
Thanks, and whoops - I've been using an old link.

Thanks for the help, wildmyron. I checked the permissions, and the files should still should be accessible. Here's a (27,2)c/80 ship that can probably be reduced by a better combination of parts:

(27,2)c/80, 34 cells:

Code: Select all

x = 50, y = 11, rule = B3aijry5cey6c7e8/S2-c3-aky4-ajkqw5-aiqy6cin78
5bo$3b3o$3bo28bo$30b3o$2bo27bo$b2o46bo$2o7bo38b2o$b3o6bo37b2o$7bo2bo
37b2o$7bob2o$7b2o!
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

5-cell (7,1)c/8 - it was literally a half-minute LLS search!

x = 5, y = 2, rule = B01c2-ai3ejkq4ajnqt5n6ek/S12ek3aekqy4knt5cjr6-ik

That is cool, but the goal of finding a (7,1)c/8 is finding one in a non-B0 rule.I believe I found a 3-cell (7,1)c/8 before, but I don't know where I posted it.

Ahgggg, fine. The wiki says "unknown" for (7,1)c/8, though.

B0 rules are separate from the others. Majestas was supposed to be updating it, but didn't, and I forgot about it. If you can find a (7,1)c/8 in a non-B0 rule, that would be a miracle.

EDIT, welp, no need to optimize the previous ship. Two transitions away is a 6-cell one:

(27,2)c/80, 6 cells:

All possible diagonal speeds with period <=27 in 2 state isotropic rules (without B0) now have an example ship with the minimum possible population.

Thanks for those ships wildmyron, I’ll add them soon. How long did the searches take? Hdjen, please check the collection before posting. Please. wildmyron and I’ve asked every time, and you don’t seem to care.

It's in a simpler rule.

They ranged from 15s to about half an hour, though most of those longer ones could probably have found different results in a shorter time with slightly more restrictive conditions. I used the technique I described on the outrunning the glider thread.
wildmyron wrote:These were all found with LLS. The shapes are mostly a function of the boundary conditions set up by the search. You can improve the search behaviour by using the make_lls_grid.py script. I used it for the 7c/22 and 7c/23 ships. As a bonus this reduces the search space and therefore improves the search speed considerably. Here's the command I used to find the 7c/23:

Code: Select all

./make_lls_grid.py -p 23 -x 7 -y 7 -f 3 3 5 5 | ./lls -r pB2-ace3aijn4-r5-n678/S0
2ae3jnr4-k5678 -i -s 'D2\'
This took about 15 seconds to run, most of which was in preprocessing.
A few notes:
  • I've been using the latest develop version of lls which uses some different arguments for period, symmetries, and population constraints. I have a feeling the resulting SAT problems can be solved faster in some instances, but I'm not sure if it was due to differences in the two systems I was testing on.
  • The '-f' option to make_lls_grid.py is less useful at higher period because it rejects some solutions with backward travelling sparks, and they seem to be the most common type.
  • I used population constraints to reject subperiodic solutions where necessary
Edit: I forgot to mention that I'm also experimenting with glide reflective symmetry

Drat, I fluffed an edit to the post. I'll fix it tomorrow.

Edit: Found the actual RLE for that ship. Thanks for letting me know.

Edit 2: A few more to round out the gaps in p29, and a few others. Search times are getting longer. Some of the fast ships can still be found in under 10 minutes, but the ones around c/3 are taking 2-3 hours or longer. I am mostly searching with a 6x6 grid using make_lls_grid.py. I am considering modifying it to create a diagonal channel in place of a square grid which moves diagonally. I've also started running a random rule search which is the source of most of the P>30 ships.

Edit 3:Fixed 13c/29d and added 14c/30d, 12c/30d, and 11c/30d. 10c/29d is now the only missing diagonal speed up to P30. I have two separate LLS searches running with different parameters, they've both been going for days. 14c/30d and 10c/30d are the only other speeds with P<=30 which don't have an optimal minimum population ship.

Re: Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds (5s) Project

Post by wildmyron » March 7th, 2019, 2:15 am

Previous post was beginning to become a mess of edits.

First off, apologies to 2718281828, I seem to have forgotten about the ships posted in January. I've made an update to the collections and where my recent results duplicated yours I put your results in. Several of the 4-cell ships have been superseded by 3-cell ships posted above. Your glide reflective ships are quite different to mine. May I ask how you are generating your LLS input files - is it via a script or hand edit to force the glide reflection?

As mentioned, I've update the files including all ships posted here since 1st of January. I've also added a collection of results from some random rule searches focused on high period diagonal ships.

Here are the new and updated ships (not already posted above) in sss format:

The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

What is the smallest 2c/68 diagonal without b0?
I’m on mobile and can’t check the collection.

wildmyron wrote: First off, apologies to 2718281828, I seem to have forgotten about the ships posted in January.
I am generating the lls input files using a small script. I am using this to find RROs, SMOSs, splitting rules etc. as well. Basically I specify an input pattern and output pattern, together with some shifts, rotations, symmetries etc. The nice thing about that is that I can easily look for rules with multiple pattern - which is very helpful to search for interesting rules.
