I recently noticed a surprisingly simple, natural transparent block reaction that destroys the block from the B-heptomino:

I've been looking back over Herschel-related Life discoveries from the past year or two. A lot of very interesting new stuff has cropped up! I'll have to put together a new version of Hersrch at some point, if I can ever figure out how many new Herschel conduits there are... many of the new discoveries seem like they might be just a bit too large or recover too slowly to be really commonly useful, though each one will certainly be an improvement for some particular Herschel wiring problem.

For a long time I've been tempted to work on a crazy-comprehensive version of Hersrch with (for example) support for the first 25-or-so lengths of each type of Herschel transceiver, plus a few dozen oversized Herschel conduits where some cleanup gets done with 180-degree glider reflectors... But then it's awfully hard to know where to stop!

Just a side note: the above substitution is not too well known, I guess, but it has been around a while. Stephen Silver mentioned it back in 2000, for example, and very occasionally it allows a Herschel circuit to fit in very close quarters; the shillelagh doesn't stick out as far as a snake / aircraft carrier / reversed eater / hat or what have you.

One way to possibly get a fast stable reflector is to start with a glider releasing reaction and use sacrificial blocks to restore the original still life, like this example by Dietrich Leithner:

(Note that the seed still life for this type reaction could be a block, boat, beehive, loaf, or even a lucky constellation)

A drifter search might then be able to find a replacement for the sacrificial block (unfortunately, I don't think it will work in this case). There are some limitations to dr that make it difficult to use for this (perturbations must be small and compact), but MikeP's program avoids those issues. Unfortunately, I have not seen him around here in a while.

Edit: I tried a similar thing recently with sparks instead of sacrificial blocks and found these new reflectors that work at periods 52 and 58 respectively (p52 significantly improved by Karel Suhajda):

Not sure. This doesn't seem to be quite a usable Heisenburp reaction as it stands, because the input glider *has* to be there or the eater doesn't survive. There seems to be quite a bit of room left to add more catalysts to suppress the active reaction, which is good... and you do get an extra glider out if the input glider is missing, too, so no doubt it could be routed around to clean up any leftover junk:

I just looked back at my old notes, and it looks like I only ran an automated Heisenburp survey for gliders going in the opposite direction. Here's the map I came up with back in December 2003 -- it's what Dietrich Leithner in 1996 called the "second glider domain" for the Herschel's SNG (second natural output glider).

In the table below, 'n' means something goes wrong if a Herschel is sent in with an existing glider in the given position (relative to the SNG). To the left of the table is all n's and to the right is all Y's. 'Y' means the glider insertion works; '!' means the glider insertion doesn't work, but the existing glider escapes unharmed. Surprisingly, there are four such points:

There was one more related result I stumbled on by accident at the same time, and never tried to clean up. If it can be tamed, it might come in handy in huge-prime-oscillator constructions or some such. Normally to change the timing on a Herschel/glider circuit you have to adjust two output streams -- one to destroy the "clock" glider and a separate one to replace it later -- unless you have a trick like this:

That's a very good and interesting question... interesting to me, anyway! My own short answer is that "easy" glider-constructible patterns are made of common seven-bit-or-smaller still lifes, spaced a few cells from each other. No pseudo-still-life constellations if possible... and no aircraft carriers or snakes, since those appear significantly less often in random ash than even fishhook eaters do, and anyway it's usually trivial to use one end or another of an eater instead. Paul Chapman and I started using the word "Spartan" around 2004 as shorthand for this seven-bit-no-snakes limit.

In Herschel-circuit construction problems so far, there are generally extra constraints on the construction gliders: they can come in only one at a time from one direction (as in Paul Chapman's 'Glue' search utility, and constructor-memory-tape.rle in Golly's Patterns/Life/Signal-Circuitry) or two at a time 90 degrees apart (as in Andrew Wade's Gemini spaceship). And between the volleys of gliders, the intermediate pattern generally needs to settle down and not throw off any uncaught gliders. Anything that doesn't appear very regularly in random ash is likely to be fairly difficult to glider-construct _in all possible orientations_ with these constraints, especially in close quarters with other still lifes nearby.

Now, this seven-bit limit is definitely a rule of thumb -- an approximation, not an exact science! It will always be perfectly _possible_ to build still lifes with higher cell counts, even in closely packed constellations, as long as there's any known glider construction at all.

The 'Spartan' dividing line was chosen after quite a bit of experimentation. The idea was to try to minimize the total complexity of construction -- the length of the "glider recipe". Yes, larger catalysts like tub-with-tails or dead spark coils could definitely be included in self-constructing Herschel circuits. Having more conduit options would certainly allow an actual self-constructing circuit to be smaller and more efficient: it might contain, say, 10% or 20% fewer catalysts. *But* if each catalyst takes, on average, 30% more gliders to construct, and the constructions maybe have to be hand-optimized instead of being automatically compiled by a program... then maybe minimizing the total number of catalysts isn't really what's important.

If short Gemini construction recipes are discovered for both orientations of dead spark coil -- and especially if someone can produce Gemini recipes to build Paul Callahan's old G5 Herschel transmitter in all eight possible orientations -- then that would be a very good argument for stretching the "Spartan" definition to include dead spark coils. Long-span Herschel transceivers are mostly just empty space, and you can't get any easier to construct than that!

But I think the odds are low that anyone will come up with those recipes: dead spark coils are very far down Achim's top-100 list of 'natural' still lifes ("JC", #49) -- way below tub_with_tail (#32) or snake (#25). With any luck someone will prove me wrong about this...!

By the way, this is an odd case where a p2 oscillator could be used in "stable" circuitry perfectly well -- a regular 'live' spark coil would work perfectly well in place of a dead one, if it turned out to be easier to construct. The periodic part wouldn't affect the catalysis at all.

Along the same lines as the spark coil: if there's a way to get all eight possible tub-with-tail orientations using Gemini-style gliders from just two directions, and you can use all those recipes to build tub-with-tail-plus-block eaters, then your new almost-Spartan G5 transmitter could be added to the self-constructing-circuitry toolkit, along with Stephen Silver's receiver and a number of other useful devices. It would certainly be handy to have a good compact easy-to-construct Herschel transmitter (along with a Spartan Herschel splitter, while I'm wishing!)... but when I looked at the tub-with-tail construction problem several years ago it didn't seem too likely to work: in practice, the constructions just plain take up too much space, making it hard to construct other nearby catalysts.

... That's enough for tonight, I think! If all this brings up more questions than it answers, please let me know.

This got me thinking a little more. Here are some sample incremental constructions of bigger-but-maybe-worth-having catalysts. Here the gliders all come from the same direction -- these are old results from Paul Chapman's 'Glue' search program. Recipes like these could serve as upper bounds for a search using Gemini-spaceship-style pairs of synchronized gliders (which is an enormously larger search space.)

I don't remember if Glue was ever able to find reasonable slow-salvo constructions for all eight tub-with-tail orientations. At the very least, some of those recipes took up an awkwardly large area.

The same is true for the above dead spark coil recipe. Any supporting catalysts nearby would have to be built later, working around the spark coil... that's the kind of constraint that can make a construction recipe more complicated very quickly. It would be nice to be able to put together a "compiler" utility that can automatically produce a glider recipe for any pattern you feed to it, without having to worry about lots of special cases.

But a design with two construction arms certainly gives you a lot more options for working around obstructions. And slow-salvo constructions could still be used when necessary, so that could cut the number of required recipe orientations in half. I guess the short summary is that it might well be worth hunting for some new tools for a "Spartan-Plus" toolkit...!

These look pretty good -- since the transmitter is a terminal conduit, it can still be very useful even if it's not tightly packed in with other still lifes.

It should be possible to reduce this boundary quite a bit if necessary. But right now this is the boundary to check to make sure that the construction will be completely trivial, with no need to develop workarounds for specific cases. Something similar can be done for tub-with-tail eaters and any other useful eight-bit-or-larger still lifes.

I just noticed, by the way, that the slow-salvo recipe I extracted from Paul Chapman's 'Glue' search utility was actually for a dock on dock, no use at all. Sorry about that -- will have to run Glue a bit longer and see if a spark coil even shows up.
