Nice find! It's not really too confusing in practice, just a new HR48B -- but it's a wonderful minimalist example of how that subtle change in eater placement makes a large difference several ticks later and many cells away. The information about which eater is present propagates through the active reaction faster than c/2 diagonally (!).

Moosey wrote:A good way to show this is that the conduit can be chained up to other conduits, e.g. BRx46B...

Yup, there are quite a few B-input elementary conduits that connect equally well to either HR44B or HR48B. If you test with BRx46B specifically it's a bit difficult to get the input Herschel in and/or the output Herschel out, but here are a couple of complete loops showing the four-tick difference in timing:

Maybe it will turn out to be handy to have a drop-in circuit substitution like this that does a four-tick adjustment and doesn't change the signal's output color the way L112 vs. L156 does.

Or maybe when that B turns into an H, the new glider output will be good for something? Have to get rid of the extra block, but that can be done in all kinds of ways, some of them with even better repeat time than this standard method:

x = 74, y = 51, rule = LifeHistory

The only new conduit added in this update is the bronco. The infrastructure of the collection, however, has undergone a major improvement.

The naming of the conduit files had become very messy after so many additions, so I wrote a script (sort_conduits.py) to impose a canonical ordering on the conduits based on their operating characteristics. The new file names for the conduits reflect this order.

More specifically, I rationalised the conduit names as consisting of one input descriptor and one or more output descriptors. The input descriptor is any one of BCDHLMPQRW or G with optional following integer (for tandem inputs). The output descriptor depends on whether it describes a spaceship or non-spaceship output:
  • A non-spaceship descriptor lists output orientation, transit time from the input object and object type.
  • A spaceship descriptor lists direction, lane number, temporal offset and object type (the last of which is the empty string for the glider).
Output descriptors are separated by underscores. A variant of a conduit is indicated by a lowercase letter after all output descriptors, and a new optional tag field comes at the end after a colon. This tag field can contain anything else pertinent to the conduit – name, catalysts used, etc. Even when the conduit itself did not change, I updated some names, especially those of the tandem-glider conduits, to match the canonical ordering.

I've also completed the renaming of the tandem glider input conduits, as well as the three conduits accepting a spaceship as input. This necessitated the following addition to the centre-cell diagram:
x = 175, y = 22, rule = LifeHistory

(The patterns on the right are a visual aid to obtain the conduit name from the conduit pattern.) For the bistable switch, I just took the boat-hitting input as the first glider and placed the other glider as far inwards as possible while maintaining the canonical orientation.

When new conduits are added, sort_conduits.py should be run (outside Golly) to restore the order. Then conduit_compiler.py should be run (inside Golly) to generate the new stamp collection; I've simplified the key function that sorts the input file names.

If I have missed any conduits in the intervening period, or simply have new conduits, please let me know.

If I looked at ElementaryConduits_17May2018.zip correctly, the table of enumerations looks like the following code table. No usages of D (dove) seem to be in the collection, but various mentions are in the thread. LOM and E also get mentions. There are also (non-useful?) conduits for SE (Schick engine).

B .8 .. 18 .3 .. .4 .. .17
C .3 .3  1 .1 .. .1 .. .10

If someone knows of a less obtrusive B eater (which would replace the gray cell) than the standard block and eater 1, this would be a new R-to-H involving two known transparent components (one of them an unknown placement):
x = 29, y = 29, rule = LifeHistory

Its utility would even then be somewhat questionable, because of the awkward input placement and the necessity of following it with a dependent conduit (which would constrict the input even more).

What's wrong with the standard block and eater 1? It seems to work:

It looks like a periodic conduit, but it's actually not, as far as circuitry is concerned. The p6 pipsquirter deletes an Annoying Beehive, but it works the same way regardless of relative timing. At worst, it takes 5 ticks longer to clean it up.

I thought maybe I could just put some kind of stable eater up there at the top, but apparently not.

You didn't mention how you get the Herschel out of there. Seems like pretty much every conduit has some kind of catalyst somewhere northeast of the Herschel, that gets in the way of the input Herschel's FNG. (?) (Except for F166, but that's hopeless also for different reasons.)

Re: The Hunting of the Elementary Conduits

A new fast way to delete B's natural block with its Herschel's FNG (or a BF20H conduit in signal-ese), with a useful amount of clearance:

EDIT: If course, I spoke too soon. There are only a handful of conduits with B outputs that can accommodate that drifter-like catalyst. It's a handful more than we had before, though.

The p8 bouncers make that one period 8, but it can be converted to period 4 by substituting bumpers. Here it is as a glider gun/Herschel factory, (p412+8N)/(odd k):

It won't break any glider-gun records, but might come in handy for building shotguns or something, by adding a dependent conduit and then an edge-shooter.

We haven't ever done any kind of thorough collection of periodic circuitry. Hersrch had various periodic components available for cases where that improved the bounding box, but by the time elementary conduits came along it wasn't clear where to collect periodic stuff.

There would be thousands of periodic conduits by now if we were paying attention, no doubt. Seems like their main use would be in the gun collection, but it's not clear that they would improve things very often.
