Most small objects can be synthesized from a number of glider that does not exceed the population of the object. (Of course, as the size of objects increase, so does the possible complexity, so larger objects are more prone to be expensive, if not impossible to synthesize.)

The few remaining overly-expensive objects are shown. Omitted are categories where all syntheses are reasonably inexpensive. Also omitted are the larger-population categories where syntheses have only been attempted for a small number of objects. (NOTE: As technology improves, objects may be removed from these lists.)



1 still-life up to 14 bits costing > 1 glider/bit

Buckingham completed the monumental task of synthesizing all objects up to 14 bits in the 1980s, and also reduced the costs of all still-lifes to no more than one glider per bit. In the 1990s, he further reduced these to strictly less than one glider per per bit (except 15 14-bit ones, of which only 12 still remain.)

Due to a bookkeeping oversight, one 14-bit still-life still requires one glider too many.
