This page and its subordinates classify objects, based on the number of gliders it takes to synthesize them. Whether or not objects are included depends on the list in question:

- Lists of objects that require specific small numbers of gliders (i.e. 2-6) include all known objects in these categories, regardless of whether or not they belong to sets of objects for which exhaustive syntheses have been attempted or not. If an exotic object can occur naturally from a small number of gliders, this is significant.
- Lists of objects that require relative numbers of gliders (i.e. one glider per bit, or more than 1) only include all known objects for which exhaustive syntheses have been attempted. Other, haphazard objects are not included, as very many of them fit these categories, and this is not particularly interesting or useful.
- Lists of objects that do not yet have any known syntheses are similar to the above. However, there are some groups of objects (for example, period 2 pseudo-oscillators where, although exhaustive syntheses have not been attempted, it has been proven that syntheses exist for all objects with a very small number of exceptions. In such cases, these exceptions may also be noted.
