Introduction

Pseudo-still-lifes (as well as other pseudo-objects) are much easier to synthesize than basic objects of the same type, because they are always composed of smaller pieces, and complexity usually increases with size. For example, in order to synthesize all pseudo-still-lifes up to 24 bits, one merely needs to know how to synthesize all still-lifes up to 20 bits (since the smallest added component has 4 bits), as well as how to add all still-lifes up to 12 bits in every orientation (since the smaller is usually added to the larger, as adding an object is usually harder than just building one by itself). While these do not cover 100% of the cases (since sometimes two objects are in awkardly close positions), they cover the vast majority of them.

In fact, all but one of the 6801 pseudo-still-lifes up to 17 bits have been explicitly synthesized (or, in the case of 17-bit ones, shown to have a synthesis), and a computer search has verified that around 99.7% of pseudo-still-lifes from 18-24 bits can be trivially synthesized from smaller still-lifes or pseudo-still-lifes.

Two still-lifes, cis shillelagh (10.21) and long cis integral (13.47) have tails that curl around them, making it quite difficult to add other objects to their front bonding sites. In the course of developing techniques to overcome this, all related pseudo-still-lifes up to 22 bits have been synthesized (except for one intractible one where the two pieces bind with each other in two different places), plus a few larger ones and a few related still-lifes and pseudo-oscillators. This accounts for the disproportionately large number of such related larger items on these lists. (Carrier bridge snake (12.106) is similar, but its derived pseudo-objects have not been studied as intensively).

The glider eater works very similarly to Eater-2. It is also composed of a block on a still-life, and can also eat LWSS, MWSS, and gliders with any spacing, from either side. What makes it truly unusual, however, is that the block is not always necessary. If a glider hits the still-life alone, it turns into a boat, and a second glider on the same path turns the boat into a block. Subsequent gliders are absorbed by the block. This means that when synthesizing this eater as part of a larger pattern, the block can be omitted, reducing the cost from 14 gliders to 12.
