Twin bees shuttle stabilized by David Bell's double block reaction (left) and Heinrich Koenig's hat stabilization.

The double block reaction is a certain reaction that uses half of a blockade to stabilize the twin bees shuttle. It was discovered by David Bell in October 1996.

The same reaction sometimes works in other situations, as shown below where the same pair of blocks eats an R-pentomino and a lightweight spaceship. The LWSS version was known at least as early as 1994, when Paul Callahan saw it form spontaneously as a result of firing an LWSS stream at random junk.

This was the shortest known stabilisation of the twin bees shuttle prior to 2018, when a block-and-boat mechanism was noticed as part of a symmetric oscillator on Catagolue, independently discovered by User:Apple Bottom and carybe. This is shown in the following period-23 pseudo-period glider gun by Matthias Merzenich:

x = 66, y = 34, rule = B3/S23 3b2o36bo2bo$2bobo26b3o7bo$3bo26bo4bo9bo$29bo5bo8b2o$9b2o19bo8bo$2o6bo 2b2o18b2o8b2o$2o5b6o$9b4o18b2o7bo$30bo9bo$29bo5bo25b2o$30bo4bo25bobo$ 9b4o18b3o28bo$2o5b6o$2o6bo2b2o$9b2o17bo11b2o14b3o5b2o$29b2o9b2o12bo3bo 5b2o$3bo24b2o23bo4bo$2bobo48bo3bo$3b2o$43b3o7bo3bo$41b2obob2o5bo4bo$ 30bo10b2o5bo5bo3bo5b2o$17bo10b5o8b2obob2o8b3o5b2o$6b2o8b2o9b2obo2bo9b 3o$6b2o7b2o9bo7bo$16b2o2b2o5b2obo2bo28bo$28b5o6bobo19bobo$30bo9b2o19b 2o$40bo$16b2o2b2o$6b2o7b2o16b2o$6b2o8b2o15b2o11bo$17bo29bo$45b3o! #C [[ THUMBSIZE 2 THEME 6 GRID GRIDMAJOR 0 SUPPRESS THUMBLAUNCH ]] #C [[ ZOOM 8 AUTOSTART PAUSE 2 GPS 10 HEIGHT 640 WIDTH 1200 ]]
