Snake pit is a period-2 oscillator made up of four snakes. It has the same rotor as a blinker, with the same external bushing as in fore and back, but with different casing. It was found by Mark Niemiec in 1972.[1]
Filling in the rotor with its cells from both phases produces a 28-cell still life, which is the unique maximum-population still life fitting within a 7 × 7 bounding box.
