I created a simple [[User:Sokwe/Template:info search|template]] to be used to look up which pattern pages are missing specific parameters in their templates (there may be some bugs, I haven't tested it much).  This can be used to look up such things as which patterns do not have defined glider syntheses or bounding boxes.  I was wondering if this template should be included on another page as a resource for other contributers if they feel they have the time to add information like this (for example, I recently added bounding box sizes to ''all'' of the still life pages).<br/>~Sokwe 17:44, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

I've created a [[Template:Reflector|template for reflectors]] because they currently all use the pattern template.  [[:Category:Eaters|Eaters]] also use the pattern template even though they are exclusively still lifes.  I suggest adding support for type=eater to the [[Template:stilllife|still life template]].  I also suggest that you delete [[Template:People]] as it has been effectively replaced by [[Template:Person]].<br/>~Sokwe 13:58, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

:It is possible to add patterns to the online database via the save/online database feature in Nathaniel's Game of Life player.  This will save the pattern to the online database in RLE format, however, it can be overwritten. The pattern can be added to the ''official'' database (including other formats) by any of the conwaylife.com [http://www.conwaylife.com/forums/memberlist.php?mode=group&g=4&sid=1a91dd137f0f14460d2527db6280b122 moderators].  Patterns in the official database can not be overwritten via the the Game of Life player, so if you find that a pattern in the official database needs to be replaced, you should contact one of us. *Make a simplified version that can be embedded into pages (this would require a MediaWiki extension) so that users can view pattern evolution without having to go to a separate page.
*Add a "clear" button to make erasing patterns easier. Also allow editing after pressing the back button, which would become especially important in case users accidentally press the aforementioned button.
I think that these would both be helpful additions.

That would indeed be quite cool, though I'm not sure I have the time at the moment for that undertaking. I'll add it to the to-do list though. As for the clear button -- there should already be a clear button at the lower-right corner of the applet. Does it not appear for you?

Unfortunately the MediaWiki spam fighting tools leave a bit to be desired -- they're actually implemented via extensions (i.e., they aren't built into MediaWiki itself at all). The extension I'm using has fairly limited categories for who is subject to spam verification and who isn't -- basically it boils down to the question of "are you an admin or not?" :: Hi Zhuyifei1999. Unfortunately, this is a result of the wiki using short URLs, and it seems that the only fix is to install a patch to apache that alters how it deals with ampersands. I don't have access to install patches on the server myself (it's a shared host), so the best that I can do it contact my host about it and hope they're willing to install it for me. Given this, I would recommend either continuing to use the work-around you have right now, or re-naming the page to something like [[Day and Night]].

Vivarium

Hi! I'm new to the wiki, but not to wikis in general or to life. Last year I started developing a project for Wikipedia called WikiWidgets that adds interactive JavaScript widgets to Wikipedia articles. The project is already deployed in the Spanish Wikipedia, and the second widget I developed was for Conway's Game of Life. The widget is called Vivarium and you can see it live at the Spanish Wikipedia here. A nice thing about the way these widgets are implemented is that they can be easily added to any MediaWiki wiki, such as this one. All that you would need to do is add the following line to MediaWiki:Common.js:

This line will load the initialization code for the widgets every time a div with the class 'WikiWidget' is found. Such a div can be inserted into any article through the Template:Vivarium that I already created. This template also allows users to define which cells should start out alive (scroll down the article in the Spanish Wikipedia to see a demo). Thus, this widget has the potential to illustrate every single article about a pattern with a working mini version of the game itself! I cannot think of anything more appropriate for this wiki, I hope you'll agree. Hi there. First off, my apologies for not responding to this sooner. Thanks very much for introducing you to your Vivarium project, which is very nice. However, we are actually in the process of rolling out another similar project on the wiki (which has been live on the forums here for some time now). In addition to being consistent with our forums, this viewer is very fast and able to handle large patterns, and has a wide variety of advanced features (e.g., other cellular automata support) that have been added in over the past few years. Here is an example of our viewer in action:

That's excellent, thanks a lot for integrating the LifeViewer applet into the wiki! Now all we need to figure out is how to best use this in articles.
I'd like some community discussion on this before unilaterally making sweeping changes across the entire wiki. Given we seem to have been lacking a central discussion page so far, I thus also took the liberty of creating the LifeWiki:Tiki bar, modelled (in spirit at the very least) on Wikipedia's Village pump, Wiktionary's Beer parlour etc. This should also lessen the load on your own talk page a bit. ;)

Handling categories for spaceship directions in Template:Spaceship

Howdy Nathaniel, I was wondering whether it wouldn't be a good idea to let Template:Spaceship handle categories for spaceship directions -- i.e. by automatically putting ships into the proper category.

Right now we only have Category:Oblique spaceships, which has four members that were all added manually; Category:Diagonal spaceships and Category:Orthogonal spaceships don't exist, though Demonoid had been placed in the former.

I think having all three categories would be valuable, and given that Template:Spaceship already takes a parameter for direction, it would be natural to use to populate them automatically.

Normally I'd have just jumped in and made the change myself, but the template's protected and I can't edit it. So I'm proposing this here instead. ;) (Is there a way to protect pages in such a manner that, say, users with the "trusted" flag can edit them even if they're not administrators?) Wrong RLE

Howdy, on a related note, I noticed the RLE for Killer candlefrobras is incorrect. The linked RLE snippet is for the "Killer candlefrobras eating HWSS" reaction (File:Killercandlefrobraseatinghwss.png); same for the Life 1.05, Life 1.06 and Plaintext files. The correct RLE for the pattern itself is this:

Hi Nathaniel,

I just realized that some pages, like 339P7H1V0 and spaghetti monster, have broken download links to RLE files. Other pages, like syringe, have links to Life 105, Life 106, and plaintext formats, but none of these work either. The RLEs for the spaceships can be copied from the RLE namespace pages, but the syringe has no RLE page, so here is its RLE:

Question about blocks

Why have you given Spam User at least 50 infinite blocks? Because the blocks are infinite, you only need to block Spam User once. -wwei23 3:18 PM 4/10/2018 NY time
