Octagon 4 is a period-4 oscillator, discovered in January 1979 by Robert Wainwright.[1] It consists of a regular octagon with sides four cells long and of four blocks.

In August 2004 Jason Summers and Mark Niemiec found a 34-glider synthesis of this oscillator,[2] which was improved to 18 gliders by Jeremy Tan on May 17, 2019.[3] A 16-glider synthesis was found on April 22, 2023.[4]

The oscillator first appeared semi-naturally in October 2014 in a soup found by Matthias Merzenich using apgsearch.[5] Almost exactly 3 in 100000 (within the margin of error) even-width eightfold (D8_4) symmetric soups will form an octagon 4 in the centre.

Without the blocks, the octagon will become 4 ponds.
