A rumbling river is any oscillator in which the rotor is connected and contained within a strip of width 2. This contrasts with a Babbling brook wherein the strip is uniformly of width 1, or a Muttering moat for which additionally it has to be cyclic, as it would be when surrounding a castle.
Rumbling river 1 is a notable example.
