Reflector categories

Very nice work on the template, especially the documentation. I'll try to update the documentation for the other templates to be more useful as well. One thing that's on my mind though - there aren't really all that many distinct known reflectors, so I'm not sure that the "Reflectors with period XX" categories would be all that useful. Could the period number in the infobox perhaps link to the regular "Oscillators with period XX" category instead? Nathaniel 19:38, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I was actually thinking the same thing. I suppose the 'stable reflectors with recovery time XX' categories would be equally useless, as each would only have one member due to the scarcity of stable reflectors. I'll go fix it now, thanks for the input.
Update: Okay, it's done. I was also thinking that the isosc parameter should probably be removed, with its functionality falling instead under type. Patterns that require a constant glider stream could then include something like: "type=unstable". 22:45, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Good Golly, it's been a while since this template was made. Should it be updated for the LifeViewer era? There's some boilerplate under the "Images" section that says you shouldn't include the glider in the pattern file. But for some reflectors, if the glider isn't present in the file, it's a bit of a pain to figure out how to use the circuit! Not sure I see a reason for this restriction any more. (?) I tried putting in some RLE, and the static image magically turned into a LifeViewer animation just as it should. The only question is how to update the instructions in the template (and maybe other templates? I haven't done a survey) to match current reality. Dvgrn (talk) 19:05, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
LifeViewer support in this template was added roundabout a year ago. Updating the instruction is definitely a good idea -- and so's checking other, similar templates for whether theirs are still up-to-date.
FWIW I also think it would be a good idea to "factor out" the documentation into its own sub-template, e.g. Template:Reflector/Doc in this case, and transclude that in the main template, the way I did with Catagolue/Stats and Catagolue/Stats/Doc (still wonder if that should live in the Main or the Template namespace, BTW).
You wanna tackle that job? I'm already spreading myself far too thin as it is. Apple Bottom (talk) 09:34, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Not quite thin enough yet, apparently--! Then again, template wrangling is one of the things I do best (and enjoy most).
I've not touched the boilerplate in this template that so dramatically informs users what NOT to do. I do agree that it should be changed, but this really is something I'd rather leave to someone who has a knack for writing text. Apple Bottom (talk) 19:51, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
