Re: Best GoL pattern ever discovered?

I am almost 99.9999...% certain no such pattern exists, for two simple reasons: 1. Let's imagine we were to place a bunch of spaceships setup for such a reaction across a torus so that the spaceships causing the reaction would wrap around to the other edge of the pattern (this is equivalent to it h...

Re: Best GoL pattern ever discovered?

Well, I don't know if I'll count this as a favorite pattern, but I have currently found out about Fast Forward Force Field (FFFF), and I must say, it's a pretty impressive effect for such a small pattern (A pattern that creates the illusion of passing the speed of light!). Besides, the name is aweso...

Re: Ulam Spiral in GoL?

Big news! I started searching for some interesting material about Ulam Spiral, and I found a website fully to it. It's not that big or has a big amount of material, but I just noticed a flash version of it, with options to change some options (layered composite number filters, inverted colors, size,...

Re: One Dimensional CA

Anyone..? I have figured out four more things- 1. For infinite-growing patterns, the only possible growth rate is 2t (double linear). That's because patterns that expand to an infinite bounding box must be expanders (thus the name), and expanders always increase in both directions. So, a spread of 2...

Re: Self-repairing pattern

Does there exist a still life (other than block) that eventually (or instantly) repairs itself after killing (altering) any single cell? While I can't tell you for sure, it seems unresonable for me to an other still life like this to exist. You see, I think that Block is the only unique still life ...

Re: Conway's Life: Garden of Eden Pattern

I'll ask the opposite question- How can you proof for specific patterns that they ARE Gardens Of Eden? I mean, a small Garden Of Eden might actually be the next generation of a dissolving pattern with a population of 10^52, and we'll never get close to discover the parent, but even then, it won't co...

One Dimensional CA

My apologize if a thread like this has already been created. I've been searching in the forum, and I didn't find one. By talking about One Dimensional Celluar Automatas, I reduce the discussion to Life-Like Cellular Automatas only. It's obvious that there aren't many options for different rules and ...

Re: Votes for Pattern of the Year 2010

I know that the last message on this thread was more than two years ago, so I'm sorry if I shouldn't have bump it. I'm just wondering about the phi calculator.. It sounds pretty amazing, but I have searched it online, and I couldn't find any RLE file of it. Can someone send me it, and if you can't m...

Well, I'm not going to punish you for this. :) Yes, I guess that's possible.
I could have choosed "Garden Of Eden" as 5th and "Sawtooth" as 4th in general, but I just chose to get to specific ones.

Best GoL pattern ever discovered?

So, as the title is saying, I'm interested to know user's personal favorite pattern in the Game Of Life. I'm only referring to the Game Of Life itself- 3/23 (or 23/3, I'm not quite sure if I should put the B first or the S first) rule, and with no unique additions (3D space, new cell states, etc.). ...

Different Growth Rates

So, before I'll start- Can anyone tell me the exact defenition of a Growth Rate for Infinite-growing patterns? I know that speed for a certain pattern (mostly spaceships) is simply a fraction that represents the movement as a number of cells, divided by the number of generations it takes for the pat...

Re: How do you find glider synthesis?

Sadly, I don't know the answer to that question, but I can add another question- What is the important purpose of building patterns with glider synthesis? I know that if you can find the glider combination, you can also build a gun/factory of that pattern. But, are there more important things that c...

Re: Methuselahs

Okay, I was just wondering about something- Can unidimensional patterns (1*N) be counted as methuselahs? If so, here are some interesting and simple methuselahs you can add in to the list in the wiki: http://infinitegrowth.wordpress.com/2008/06/10/unidimensional-patterns/ Of course, the most famous ...

Ulam Spiral in GoL?

Ulam Spiral is a basic and a simple method of visualizing prime numbers. Mathematicians have programmed it into very big numbers, and the best one I could found online is up to the number 9*10^10 (90 giga pixels). http://www.ulamspiral.com/generatePage.asp?ID=21 You can clearly see a lot of diagonal...

Re: New User Question

Thank you! I haven't thought it'll be so simple. I'm now looking at some patterns people are putting in the forums, and it seems like a big part of the discoveries in the GoL world comes from this very forum :) I'm starting a new, simple research about the odds of a random-generated pattern to be a ...

New User Question

So, I'm a seventh grader, and in the last few years, I have been very interested in Cellular Automatas, especially Life-Like, and of course, the most famous of them- Conway's Game Of Life. I only signed to the forum today, but I've been looking at the forum for a few weeks. Unfortunatly, I don't kno...
