Re: Let's Make a Fortune Shorting the Stock Market

Margin trading is a more effective way of losing a fortune and going into debt.

That said, I wonder if some of those candlestick charts could be turned into musical scores. It might be worth a try.

Re: Realizing CGOL a 3d tiling

Note: I corrected the picture, which had steps 1 and 3 swapped. I also highlighted the live cells. I finally put together the 4 phases of a moving critter glider and took pictures. This shows the steps as a composite, and I have also altered the images to correct for perspective. The glider moves u...

Re: Waiting for a warranty repair on 3D printer so I'll write instead

My designs seem to be getting more attention on Printables than on Thingiverse, so maybe that's the right place for them. I'll put up the Margolus tiles soon, but first I want to photograph a few layers to demonstrate. Meanwhile, here are the Robinson triangles: https://www.printables.com/model/8327...

Re: Link to my Thingiverse page

I've also imported these designs to Printables. Maybe that's a more up to date choice. https://www.printables.com/@PaulCallahan_1958695 I don't mean to spam, but I would like to build up some critical mass for these designs. I'm not trying to sell them or anything, but I think they may be of interes...

Link to my Thingiverse page

This page contains my 3D print designs, at least one of them related to CGOL, namely the still life tiles. https://www.thingiverse.com/pcallahan/designs Normally I don't go out begging for likes, but if you have a Thingiverse account and can do it, and if you like the design, I'd appreciate some. It...

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

Here's a Thingiverse link to my CGOL still life tiles: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6563198 This is the same as I what I posted in February for Tinkercad. I haven't done any more work adjusting the sizes. I could probably get a closer fit on the inside cells but they're fine as long as you don'...

Re: Realizing CGOL a 3d tiling

I finally made a set of Margolus Critters tiles using a 3D printer. I have been putting off the extensive write-up I plan, but I'm awaiting warranty repairs on the printer right now, so this might be a good time to explain more and make less plastic junk. I'll just give this teaser for now: 20240402...

Waiting for a warranty repair on 3D printer so I'll write instead

My Flashforge ran into a problem (electronic not mechanical) but it is still under warranty so I'm staying hopeful. I need to make some detailed writeups anyway, but here are two things I've done. The first is improved (smaller) Robinson triangles, which I have made public in Tinkercad https://www.t...

Re: i wish i could give everyone here a hug

After school today, I really need a hug. I just wanted to show how I could karate-chop a stick, most people gave me death threats and just told me to f*ck off. I really need a hug. Now that's true Alanis Morissette irony : Like getting a death threat when you needed a hug. "And isn't it ironic? Don...

Penrose Kite and Dart tiles in Thingiverse

After putting a lot of trial and error into these Penrose tiles, I'm happy with how they fit together, and I'm ready to make them public. I hope it will interest someone here, but I'm putting it in Sandbox since it's not CA-related. Here's the link: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6528364 You can ...

Re: More tab-in-slot Penrose tiles

More pieces for a bigger layout, top and bottom. I may stop here unless I find a friend to give these to. They seem to work OK. There's also an opportunity to put a texture on top, such as the braid I have shown in another thread. 20240220_220714.jpg 20240220_220723.jpg These work well enough, thoug...

Re: More tab-in-slot Penrose tiles

Here are conventional kite and dart tiles with jigsaw connections. The only novel part is that they are hidden on one side. It makes it a little tricky to assemble, but you just have to rotate the tile to connect from above and below simultaneously. Once it's together, it holds very well, since an i...

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

Well, I did work out the conditions for infinite still life patterns in which each 3x3 neighborhood has exactly 4 cells (1 live surviving with 3 or 1 empty, overcrowded by 4). See https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2036&start=1700#p86918 and https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php...

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

Now that I have a 3D printer, I truly appreciate how much work I was doing gluing layers of cardstock or making pieces from polymer clay. It takes about 5 minutes a piece (roughly and dependent on size) but I can do other things while it's happening. Here is https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Cis-block_on_...

Re: Let's open a gift shop

I'm going to continue on this thread rather than sandbox, because it is relevant to CGOL. After many impractical, labor intensive approaches, I think I finally have a design for 19 still life tiles that can be 3D-printed pretty reliably (I am using PLA on a Flashforge Adventurer 3 Pro 2 and still a ...

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

I experimented with putting contours on the overcrowding cells, and it is feasible. The main advantage I thought of at the time was to make it easier to fill in the loneliness cells, which are usually more common around the boundary, at least for small still life patterns. However, in the process, I...

Re: More tab-in-slot Penrose tiles

I think I like the jigsaw triangles better. They are less finicky for compensating for thickness, and hold together a lot better. I have another idea for non-flippable kites and darts, but I still have to work on it. Here are 60 triangles, with equal numbers of white and blue. It does not decompose ...

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

It's been almost a year since I posted to this thread, but now I have a 3D printer and I'm getting good results with the same size pieces (25mm cells). Here is an eater, using all the new pieces except the block center, with live cells all around. That one also prints well. 20240213_080616.jpg Note ...

That's what I expect, but it has been a lot shorter lately. For some reason I'm still logged in now, so I can't figure it out.

Is automatic logout now much faster?

I have noticed that I have to login to this website again almost every day. I am pretty sure it used to keep me logged in for a long time, usually long enough to forget my password and have to request a new one. Did something change in the configuration or is it something on my side?

Re: More tab-in-slot Penrose tiles

Hidden tab version of flippable triangles. These actually print with a flatter overhang than usually recommended, with a slope of 2/3 or about 56.3° from vertical. This makes it possible to go out 3mm in a 2mm layer. I used a total thickness of 4.5mm but made the tiles smaller to use less material. ...

Re: More tab-in-slot Penrose tiles

Another note to myself. File under: why did I ever find Penrose tiles confusing? If you start with Robinson triangles, aka kite and dart halves, all you have to do is build them in succession. You begin with a dart half of unit area (as defined for this purpose), and a kite of area (sqrt(5)+1)/2, or...

Re: More tab-in-slot Penrose tiles

I finally got a 3D printer, and amazingly, it isn't all that finicky or hard to use. It's a Flashforge Adventurer 3 Pro 2, chosen for economy and "beginner" recommendations. I have seen some negative reviews but it works so far. I did have to recalibrate it because it was squishing my tiles by 0.3mm...
