Equally useless: at time 30, the active region is an inward-facing edgy bookend-producing octomino about to hit a beehive. At time 57, the SAME inward-facing octomino (shifted) attacks the active region.

Precisely. It is the very "temperature of chaos" metric that makes michelife9 so intriguing, I feel. On a 50% soup in a torus, you get large patches of Life and Antilife battling for control of the thermostat, as it were. It might be illuminating to expand this into an equivalent 4-state rule with ...

This is a new p2 oscillator , right ? Someone make a new page for this :) There are exactly 6596 21-bit period 2 oscillators, determined by exhaustive computer search. Re: Thread for basic questions
I realized something... many newcomers (mistakenly) think that the LifeWiki contains all known information about CGoL, even things like random still lives, P2s, medium-lived methuselahs etc. Why is this the case? Running this for 100+ generations then pressing Ctrl-Z causes the active region to turn into a tub. It seems to depend on what steps you use. E.g. if I step every 20 until 200, repeatedly pressing Ctrl+Z works fine until 120. Then, at 100 the bottom is just a tub, then at 80 it's a tub and a loaf, ...
