Re: HBK as Caterpillar
What a wonderful design! Absolutely nothing like I envisioned many years ago, but very understandable with a bit of experimentation. Because the spacing of the glider "tracks" themselves encodes an entire recipe, and that recipe can be printed off as many times as is necessary by just instantiating ...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
I built some smaller irrational density patterns back in the 1990s Great to see - I had figured that the idea behind them was simple enough that I was definitely not the first. The c/2 orthogonal puffers are a lot more versatile in terms of getting interesting slopes. One of the big issues with the...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
Did some research, and have something more visually striking than a stream of gliders with irrational density. Here is a pattern that uses corderships to puff a suitable two object splitter. Return glider does the feedback loop, other glider helps contribute to a line drawn in the universe with slop...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
I wonder whether it is even possible to have a constant bit stream with an irrational density of each bit It is! x = 235, y = 185, rule = B3/S23 129bo$128b3o$128bo2bo$128b3o$128b3o14b2o$127bob2obo12b2o$128bo2b3o$ 128b4ob2o$129bob3o$131b3o10bo$132b2o10bo$145bo$143bobo7b2o$128b2o16bo 6b2o$128b2obo$12...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
The challenge with using this mostly comes from having two signals, each with asymptotic density 0 but whose ratio is phi. I would rather try to come up with a pattern where the asymptotic density of gliders within a single stream was something irrational. This would allow the object to move at a co...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
Here's a rather simple feedback loop that uses the idea outlined here 0 -> 12 move along vector A 1 -> 01 move along vector B 2 -> 22 move along vector C to make two streams of gliders, one which has density phi more than the other. So if you use these streams to implement block pushes along two vec...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
I'm sure that the first thing that comes to mind from the words "growing tape loop" would be a poor fit for a pseudo spaceship, but there must be some loose interpretation of it, which couples very will with a loose interpretation of the actual quest here. A growing "capacity to store information" i...

Re: Irrational slope pseudo spaceships
Could we recursively construct the Fibonacci word using a growing loop tape with replacement rule
0 -> 1 move vertically
1 -> 01 move horizontally
which would make a ship with slope phi?

Fantastic work finishing the exponential-linear design. 10^876 is a nice benchmark! I haven't played nearly as much with game of life as I have with Opus Magnum lately, but I took an interest in this thread specifically because it seems very similar to an Opus Magnum challenge I opened a couple mont...

Edit: […]Can we make a die hard with unknown lifespan? For example, a modified Fermat prime calculator that terminates and vanishes after finding the sixth such integer (assuming it exists). Or a computer doing so when the digits of the binary representation of a transcedental number include a frac...

Re: (Engineered) diehards
The question here is interesting. "Given a pattern with a initial bounding rectangle of area at most N, and the requirement that the pattern's fate is population 0, how long can it possibly live"? With N as the parameter, you could phrase it as a pseudo-busy-beaver of game of life, and I think it is...

Hello, I exist again. I was messaged about this thread, and it took about a week before I could read it fully enough to contribute meaningfully. But, now I can help answer questions. And I'll start with another typical wall of text, hopefully outlining the project from a much more distant perspectiv...

Re: Crawlers
The problem there is that the two tracks would eventually converge. Well yeah, but isn't that how 31/240 etc work? you set up something to delete the last B-heptomino and connect a synthesis at a translation. Your understanding of the prior work seems wrong, the crawlers are not deleted in any of t...

I'm giving golly 10GB of my RAM and still getting 99% garbage collections when trying to run at 2^18.
Edit: Pushed it to 13 GB and still got 99% GCs so probably my 16GB laptop can't run away either.

And then someone doing so could also be free to define non-diagonal oblique selections, perhaps with slope 45/19 along the sides. I might need to invest some time with Lua.

This classy bamboozle: The switch that turns on the extra A...F printer characters hasn't gotten much independent review, though. Is there a way using the banana spark configuration to also make some methuselah? Have it explode a bit, but when stable remain clear of the three control cells? Life update: I have completed classes. I might be able to put some spark back in this project. It just seemed a bit too thinkythonky to do in parallel with the whole not-failing-grad-level-physics-courses thing. A couple remarks (mainly here to get present-me on the same page as past-me): There is a...

Can someone clue me in as to the authenticity of the fine structure constant calculator? I have seen it posted a few times but wasn't certain if it was actually computing it (from loop diagrams..?) or performing some hard coded sequence. I don't want to have to trace the calls and values stored in t...

Am I the only one who finds it extremely difficult to understand how the excavated dodecahedron is self-dual? I'm with you there. The polyhedron itself has 12 vertices of maximal radius but it's dual looks to have 60. So the equivalence has to be topological rather than geometric, making it harder ...
