Re: Logic Life Search

Yeah, it considers two patterns distinct if they have different evolutions or different rules. I see how this isn't the behaviour you want in this case. I'll add it to the todo list, but LLS isn't my priority at the moment.

Does there exist a pattern which, when all cells in its bounding box are inverted, will become itself in any n generations? (excluding junk produced from the object)

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

Ah I see. I was thinking of 'rewindable' in the context of things like Gardens of Eden and the Grandfather problem, where the question is whether the pattern has any predecessors at all. Whereas you were thinking in the context of things like glider syntheses, where the question is whether gliders c...

My friend Joseph Myers conducted arguably the most comprehensive study on tilings of polyominos, polyiamonds, and polyhexes: https://www.polyomino.org.uk/mathematics/polyform-tiling/ This was part of an attempt to find an aperiodic monotile; whilst unsuccessful in this regard, he succeeded in break...

I can't explicitly remember one, but in my experience they often arise from any fuse that burns orthogonally at c. Are there similar pattern fam...

Thank you to carsoncheng for closing nominations above. Sorry for not being around to run this process. Re: RCT remaining tasks

My question is - Is it necessary for the resulting 6G synthesis to produce no NW or SE gliders? I've already ruled out those that produce SW gliders, since those go out into space at the speed limit. Unfortunately, the example pattern I provided isn't timed properly for use in the RCT, and it also ...

Pattern Of The Year 2022 Nominations

It's time for POTY 2022! Nominate patterns in this thread. All patterns nominated must be in B3/S23 and have been discovered in 2022. Re: Black holes in CGOL

I think such a black hole does exist for any n. To construct it, go through all the n by n patterns. Make a border capable of containing the first one. Then, make a border capable of containing the second one when run inside the first border. Repeat this for all 2^n^2 patterns, and you have a border...

Can an ice nine be constructed with 16 gliders?
The idea behind ice nine is that it arises in sufficiently large random soups. So it should be very easy to construct. You just smash together 10^100 gliders at random. And of course you can use the RCT to make this with 16 starting gliders.

What if the number of n-glider syntheses is asymptotic to BB(n)(the busy beaver function?( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busy_beaver )). On Linux, could we stop using the user's home directory for ~/.golly? The new consensus for dotfile locations seems to be the freedesktop.org standard.
