Re: Life illusions

1. Copy the pattern below 2. Paste into Golly (I'm using 2.8 ) 3. Turn off gridlines, press play and hold F, look at the center. 4. It looks like a knightship! Probably. At least it looked like it for me. Pressing and holding F doesn't seem to do anything on my computer. It centers the pattern once...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Can anyone tell me some good online archives or encyclopaedia other than wiki See this thread: http://www.conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=20 But forums, even with sticky posts, are lousy reference resources. There's a "Books and articles" category on the Wiki; there should be a "Websites"...

You appear not to have the g++ compiler installed. Try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install build-essential

The Period 14 gun page itself is empty. Was it non-empty once? I guess you need to have wiki write permission to see page history? It's not on the Wayback Archive.

Some pages link to error pages instead of RLEs. One example is Ed On that page the first reference is a deadlink. Python syntax error from golly

I'm using golly 2.8 on a Mac runnning OS X 10.11.6 and Python 2.7.11. Tracking down a problem with dvgrn's isotropic-rule-gen.py led me to create foo.py containing only these two lines: a = {"boy":"dog"} rule = { k: False for k, v in a.iteritems() } If I run this from the OS X command line it execut...

I'm surprised drc hasn't (at least in this thread) mentioned B3/S14567 , which he appears to have been the first to investigate with apgsearch. Re: B36/S23, B37/S23, B38/S23

In fact B37c/S23 is explosive, while B37e/S23 isn't. I have no idea why. Presumably because preloaves occur more often than pies. (Right?) Presumably it's not solely the frequency that matters, but the consequences when they do occur. If you consider an isolated preloaf and pi in each of the two ru...

B36/S23, B37/S23, B38/S23

I'm sure there must be something on this subject written up somewhere but I have no idea how to find it if so. A 32x32 50% soup in B36/S23 (HighLife) typically stabilizes in about 1000 generations. A similar soup in B38/S23 also typically stabilizes in 1000 generations or so, though not uncommonly i...

Yeah, the Catagolue page led me to think the term "apgsearch" encompassed apgnano and apgmera, hence my post in this forum. Sorry about any confusion. Thanks for the response; I did mean apgmera, so I'll just continue with totalistic rules for now.

Re: How to use apgsearch?

I've mentioned this in other threads before, and you need to first run isotropic-rulegen.py to allow the RuleLoader algorithm to run the rule, and then enter the rule name with an underscore instead of a slash when you run the actual search. As I have said, I hope to fix this soon. Which other thre...
