Re: Thread for basic questions
This is probably a really stupid question, but I'm pretty new to 1D automata. can someone explain to me why W90 doesn't work? What do you mean by "doesnt work"? when I try to set the current rule to W90, golly tells me it's not valid in any algorithm. other W rules work fine. I'm using an outdated ...

Forum Search Function
I feel a bit bad for starting a thread just for this, but I don't know where else to put this question. In the conwaylife forums, there is a search bar that can be used within forums or individual threads. However, it doesn't like a lot of search terms. For instance, say I want to find a herschel co...

Re: Thread for basic questions
Well, I never got SLmake to run. I even tried it again on my laptop. doesn't work, but for different reasons. However, I found a much easier way to do what I was trying to, which does not require SLMake. Thanks everyone for your help! Tangentially related question: In the Herschel conduit collection...

Re: Thread for basic questions
Alright, sorry for posting so many questions. This should be the last one, and I can delete all of them when I am done if necessary. I used a different mirror to download Cygwin, and it worked perfectly. I compiled the program. However, when I try to run the executable I get an error message stating...

I came back around an hour later and woke my computer up, but when I tried to hit play on the pattern I got an error message saying "Can't create pattern file!" I'll need a lot more info: Which platform (Windo...

Re: Thread for basic questions
Well, I should probably stop spamming this thread with questions, but I am still having difficulty. I believe the gcc-g++ package that you want is in the "Developer Tools" group -- something like that. The installer does have a slightly weird search function, that should let you find gcc-g++ 5.4.0.1...

Alright, thanks. Currently installing. It is asking me to select what packages to install; which should I select for these purposes? Here I couldn't find either of the packages listed. I tried to install it anyway, hoping it would work out. However, when I try to open the terminal it just tells me ...

The hard part might be getting used to Cygwin, if you're using Windows -- starting with downloading it. You'll want the 64-bit version ... Well, my virus guard says the .exe is unsafe. Is it trustworthy enough for me to override this? Yes, see sections 2.7, 2.8, and 2.9 in the FAQ: https://cygwin.c...

Re: Thread for basic questions
I guarantee this is a dumb question (most of mine are) but is there any program to find salvos that is good for the less tech-savvy (i.e. doesn't take a lot of steps to compile, has simplistic input and output, etc.)? If not, is there an algorithm to find salvos by hand other than guess and check? T...

Ah well. Related note, is there a compilation somewhere of all known still-lives which can be "pushed" by gliders, with the glider being destroyed in the process, or something of the sort?

I threw together some simple icons for the first four states. The written direction is that in which the cell travels, while the arrow is the direction in which it pushes a cell of state 5. To use these, just paste the whole mess at the bottom of the rule. @ICONS XPM /* width height num_colors chars...

Easy: x = 11, y = 4, rule = All_Speeds E9.E$.E7.E$.E.E3.E.E$2.E5.E! It doesnt work at all..? oh crap, I didn't copy the whole things correctly. Let me try again: x = 14, y = 11, rule = All_Speeds 7.E6$.E10.E$2.E8.E$E.E8.E.E$.E10.E$.E10.E! Wow, still left one cell out. This one works for real, I hop...
