Re: Stable signal converters

This would enable self-constructing single-channel circuitry with a repeat time of 62 instead of 90, wouldn't it? Would it? Yes, if we had a H-to-(LWSS-on-LWSS) converter with that repeat time. But it's not easy to build a converter like that without using syringes, which bumps the repeat time back...

Re: Stable signal converters

Is this LWSS-on-LWSS to H known? I would expect something this simple to already be in this thread, but I don't see it here. Interesting! I don't remember any previously known *WSS-pairing-to-anything converter, so I'd say it's definitely a new discovery. This might not be too surprising, since we ...

Re: Small Spaceship Syntheses

Yeah, the Component Collection doesn't contain all the components necessary for making all the greyships, just the ones necessary to make them all from a certain 227-bit still-life . I was thinking that the recipe for that xs227 could just be hard-coded into the script so that we don't have to worr...

Is Citation needed the same person? I'm looking at this post , where obvious questions are asked in addition to having an obsession with the Trump accounts. Also, there's small text at the bottom, just like ColorfulGabrielsp138 two posts later. Citation needed's user page has the following text in ...

Re: Thread for your website-related questions

Am I really allowed to create custom rule tables on the wiki? Whenever a rule definition is needed for LifeViewer to be able to display and animate patterns on the forums or the LifeWiki, it's okay to create a Rule:{rulename} article in the Rules namespace. If you make thousands of them very quickl...

Re: Updated oscillator stamp collection (was: Re: Golly suggestions)

What if the size is dependent on the bounding box? The size of the label is already somewhat dependent on the bounding box, but they're still mostly too small. This is going to take a lot of fiddling to get exactly right. One problem is that many names are quite short, but occasionally there's an a...

Re: Updated oscillator stamp collection (was: Re: Golly suggestions)

Is there any reason why the LifeViewer labels only appear for those in the center of the window and not anywhere within the window? That's an experiment with LABELTARGET, a feature added to LifeViewer years ago but pretty much never used. If all the LABELTARGET commands were taken out, labels would...

Re: Small Spaceship Syntheses

I think a good first step in making a greyship-synthesising script will be to convert all the above pieces into continuous syntheses. It's probably not obvious how to use the above pieces to make arbitrarily large greyships, so I made the following diagram to demonstrate how the two smallest yet to...

Re: Census of small evolving patterns

The octohash database is looking for that specific predecessor, not just any honey farm. Yup, exactly. If you ask the octohash database about the final constellations for those six patterns, you get very different results: honeyfarm: 3929 (not just 176), R-pentomino: 2803 (not just 432), pi-heptomi...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Nope, not a finite one. c/2o is a hard limit in rules without B012. That is to say, it's a hard limit for spaceships traveling through empty space in non-B012 universes such as Conway's Life. There are known spaceship-looking things that travel through infinite agar s that have some ON cells and so...

I don't have Discord. Discord does have a downloadable app, but I don't know much about it and have never used it either. www.discord.com is all you really need, once you've followed a ConwayLife Lounge invite link and set up an account. I think the best way to do it is with a live Zoom meeting. I'...

dvgrn (or anyone else), can you run octohash on these patterns (or their descendants) that don't reach the 20-cell minimum, as well as some of the ones above for reference, to determine how common the ones below are? Sure -- click to see octohash numbers: x = 70, y = 53, rule = B3/S23 2$4bo$3bobo10...

I found a (typical) block catalyst that converts a region into a large spark. I don't know how common the active region that leads up to it is. It's common enough to be in the octohash database exactly once: x = 18, y = 10, rule = LifeHistory .C8.2C$2.C7.C.C3.2A$3C8.C2B2.2A$10.B.B$10.B.B$7.B.B2CB$7...

Also, why does the brain eater use a [Silver] g to h rather than the faster, smaller, syringe? Until proven otherwise (by somebody building a smaller, faster zombie) the Silver G-to-H can get a glider back to clean up the blinker faster than a syringe or any other known technology can -- so that's ...

Re: Golly 2.7 doesn't recognize perl path

As we're on the topic of perl scripts, why is modify.pl in Golly/Help/Lexicon not converted to python or lua yet? There's not much need to -- that's a Perl script, not a Golly Perl script. It's not clear that that script really needs to be in the files distributed with Golly -- it's more meant to b...

I found a four-glider slow block->canoe component (which I didn't see in components_v3.rle, but that guide is poorly organized and probably outdated, so I can't be sure that this is new). x = 17, y = 24, rule = B3/S23 14bobo$14b2o$15bo4$2o9bo$2o8bo$10b3o8$6b2o$6bobo$6bo3$12b2o$12bobo$12bo! I intended it so that every tick, all state 1 cells turn to state two, then all surviving state two cells become state one, and the cycle continues.
