Re: Thread for basic questions
Why is the silverfish so much smaller than the centipede? Long story short, in 2014 chris_c had found a way to support a block-trail-creating "silverfish" front end of a 31c/240 spaceship, using only two streams of upward-traveling spaceships instead of the six in the centipede. The number of upwar...

NewLifeCA #43, 3 December 2023: ever yet more superer diehards, new toggle conduits, engine-collecting, and a new knightship caterpillar Suddenly it has been over three months since the last NewLifeCA bulletin. It's hard to get caught up properly after such a long hiatus, but I'll give it a try. ...

Um. Given that they're shifters and not reflectors, how do you plan to make them into a loop?HerscheltheHerschel wrote: ↑Yesterday, 10:23 amI was referring to a loop involving only three-block shifters.

Are these puffers [known]? (Moved question to Basic Questions, since these definitely aren't spaceships.) These puffers are probably not in the "knowable" category. Someone may possibly have seen them before, but wouldn't have kept track of them -- there are just too many medium-to-large puffers th...

Yes, there are the adjustable oscillators from way back, and then this modern construction by David Bell seems like it must count as a loop. The link is right there in the three-block shifter article.

50c/154 helix... 50c/154 is the speed of this H track... Wow, that's ambitious -- Coe ships as part of a helix definitely seem like a first. The Coe ship does seem to do an unusually good job of pushing the burning reaction forward much faster than a glider's normal speed. Has any research been don...

(6,3)c/1024 spaceship: 6,3c1024.mc.gz I feel like this pattern needs a round of applause, or something bigger than "likes" anyway. It's a really impressive construction! The .mc.gz file is 123938x112640, minimum bounding box 123938x112538, population minimum 346912 and maximum 356383 -- smaller tha...

This is not going to be anything checked in Golly, but could be a helpful addition/supplement to everything else that already exists. Hmm. This thread was created with the purpose of collecting terms and definitions specifically to be added to the version of the Life Lexicon that is checked in to G...

Anyone cares to complete... for style points (and repeat time)? How's this for style points? It works at 74/75/78+ ticks due to an internal syringe. The H-to-2G splitter happens to fit exactly with the minimum possible number of Snarks -- no adjustability needed on the north side -- and the trombon...

Probably. It's gotten to be a defined term by this time, but it's not easy to find the definition . The LifeWiki has "spacefiller" and "space nonfiller", but not "space cleaner". I would think the definition would go on the LifeWiki first in this case. It's not a specific small pattern that can get ...

Why does Catagolue have a hat on the eater 2? https://catagolue.hatsya.com/ Tradition! This has happened in previous years. It's December now -- holiday season. It seems eminently reasonable that something hosted on hatsya.com should add a Santa hat to its icon in December. Switching the eater2 to ...

What is the smallest glider splitter that produces two gliders in the same lane? Assuming you're talking about starting from a glider -- these things are called "G-to-G0" converters. Unfortunately the tandem-glider outputs were too awkward to keep in newer versions of the Elementary Conduits Collec...

What I say is that you (dvgrn) were involved in the dispute on the content of OCA:tlife from the very beginning. You were objecting to my rewording and participating in an edit war with me as a side. You are involved and biased in this disagreement. I'll try a brief response here, but honestly I've...

Does this answer your questions? No, it really doesn't. There were two questions in my last post. Both of them allow the possibility of yes-or-no answers. I've asked for yes-or-no answers. You haven't given any yes-or-no answers. So your response doesn't answer those two questions in any way. You a...

Transitions are events that can happen, when certain conditions are met. An example of a transition would be "an alive cell survives". An example of a condition would be that an alive cell survives when it has 2 alive neighbours. Question #1: @confocaloid, given our recent discussions, might it not...
