Re: Thread for basic questions

Why has this pattern been ignored for so long? (7 months) x = 20, y = 29, rule = B3/S23 o$3o$3bo$2b2o3$3b2o$2bobo4bo$2bo5bobo$3bo4bobo$3o6bo$o17b2o$18bo$16bob o$16b2o2$6b2o$5bo2bo$5bo2bo$4bo4bo$4bo4bo$5b4o$4b2o2b2o$4bo4bo$4bo4bo 3$5b4o$6b2o! Re: Results of catalyst tests

The large still life produced in the leftmost result may have at least some niche utility, as it can react with a particular variety of active region, where there's a c/2 engine-like face right next to something that will tame the reaction with the catalyst (some examples shown here)... Wow, a 20-t...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Is it possible to run apgsearch using custom seeds? Yes! A starting point is Catagolue as a generic pattern inventory . It does seem as if there should be a quick LifeWiki tutorial written giving all the details of an example of how to run a set of RLEs through apgsearch and upload them to Catagolu...

Re: Thread for your speculative elementary conduits

It seems this partial h-to-g might be used as a X-to-G0 if one can find a good way to re-direct a glider generated upstream... Hm. I definitely like it, but then again I always want to try and rescue this kind of thing and make something "useful" out of it: x = 179, y = 153, rule = LifeHistory .D$2...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Why did you prefer RLE instead of apgcode? I can copy RLE straight out of Golly, and someone can copy and paste RLE straight back into Golly and see what it is -- or get a picture of it by decoding it manually, for small enough patterns. I'm not as confident of my ability to get the picture exactly...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Is there a Herschel conduit that outputs the xp0_16o4 Herschel parent? Does xp0_16o4 have a known glider synthesis? I don't know of any conduits that produce much of anything besides 4bo$5b2o$obobo$obo! The only exception I can remember is the Fx158, which produces just 2bo$3b2o$obo$o! instead. x =...

Re: Ask the Game of Life Guru one question!

I don't think so. [chain of eater5s] That doesn't work too well. If we were concerned only about gliders coming from one direction (NW or SE), this would have a safety rating of 1/2. But gliders from the NE or SW destroy things 17/18ths of the time, which brings the total asymptotic rating down far...

Re: Ask the Game of Life Guru one question!

I'd take the Yedidia-Aaronson Turing machine (which halts if and only if a certain extension of ZFC is inconsistent), convert it to a GoL pattern, and ask 'is this an infinite-growth pattern'? https://www.scottaaronson.com/busybeaver.pdf Well, that might be a nice thing to know, but it's not very p...

Re: Thread for basic questions

I've never seen that occur naturally. Can you provide an example? Not that one in particular, but I've seen the related predecessor (where the bookend itself has an open hinge) occur occasionally. Looks like mniemiec's variant is just common enough that a natural result shows up in the octohash dat...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Why is the canonical version of the century this: x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23 b3o$3bo$ob2o$2o! and not the bookend or the normal B-hept-minus-one cell predecessor? I think that I was the one who picked that form for the Elementary Conduits Collection, and I'm not sure if I had any particularly good...

Re: Thread for your unsure discoveries

There is this: https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1849&p=101222#p101243 That's a good H-to-LOM, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with this new incomplete LOM-to-maybe-X. It might make sense to focus on finding a lot more direct H-to-LOM options before bothering to worry about wha...

Re: Structures resistant to attack

Other rules have quadratic replicators that replicate fast enough that copies just go around whatever is in their way. Is that any more likely? Definitely maybe not, I'd say, but I don't know what I'm talking about... and I don't think anyone else does either, as far as a "more likely" judgment goe...

Re: Thread for your unsure discoveries

Does LOM get used in any conduits? While this isn't a complete conduit, the active region goes very far. The block gets destroyed in generation 191, giving a lot of time to do something with it. x = 14, y = 10, rule = B3/S23 7b2o$6bobo$7bo4$2o7b3o$2o7bo2b2o$9b2o2bo$11b3o! Nothing much yet. This mig...

Re: Structures resistant to attack

What do you mean with the computer thing? Of course we can compile Spore or something to a Turing machine and run that, but in the same spirit we can just do anything we want so that's not really that significant. Yeah, that's pretty much what I mean. You're really right that we "can't have life in...

Hey! Sorry it took such a long time to reply! Thanks for the interesting links! It seems like there is so much stuff to read about, the forums and wiki have a high branching factor :). Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

More partials: p79, good fallback, bad period... I don't think anything above 78 (or special-case 74) is really a "bad period". Sphenocorona's H-to-domino can supply those sparks in a true-period way. Unfortunately Sphenocorona's H-to-domino doesn't work in this context: x = 228, y = 109, rule = Li...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Is there a program that generates random INT rules? For some definitions of "random", yes . You may not find that a 50% chance of each isotropic bit being ON tends to give very interesting rules, unless you really like chaotic explosions. It's easy to change the random weightings in the script if y...

Re: Structures resistant to attack

I was wondering if there are any (non-trivial) structures that are resistant to attack from the outside. What I mean by this is a structure that stays stable around the origin no matter what the cells outside of the bounding box start out as. For example there could be a bunch of glider guns aimed ...

Re: Gun Discussion Thread

While the p486 and p576 oscillators don't set the bounding box record for glider guns (as far as I know), maybe they do for XWSS guns since they can be made multibarrel with reflected gliders? Probably not (if I'm understanding the suggestion correctly). Here are the current smallest p486 and p576 ...

I realized something: If we double the "wicks" on themselves, the left one is still a single object but the right one is now two objects! To clarify: you know that the right one is two objects, but there isn't necessarily an existing object census algorithm that can reliably separate a "pseudo-wick...
