Re: Thread for your script-related questions
By the way, is it normal that the speed of the script is roughly 1 constellation/second ? Recompiling the collisions would take a month of computing. Hmm, that seems a bit slow. I remember it taking a few days, but not as long as a week, let alone a month. Given "LONG_ENOUGH = 65536", the only thin...

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Where do deleted threads go? I don't know any more than what public phpBB documentation says . There might be some database leftovers from deleted posts that Nathaniel can see and I can't, for example. But for what it's worth, when someone deletes a post, there's an entry in the moderator logs that...

Re: Thread for your script-related questions
Even better if the code would work for alien objects and alien spaceships in other rules. E.g. hitting 10x10 Blockic constellations with a lepa in LeapLife. Yup, that's a really good use case to keep in mind -- or even gliders hitting LeapLife constellations. In Life you can assume that nothing int...

Re: Golly suggestions
An issue was reported here (and see my reply immediately below that post for triage) relating to the use of a 3rd party tool that is creating RLE with new lines between counts and verbs. I'm not sure how many other tools out there will be creating now invalid RLE and if it is worth allowing newline...

Topic locked.
Will delete this whole thread in a few days.
I've sent out a couple of PM, so I'd just like to let people review what went wrong and think about how to avoid having this kind of thing happen again.

Re: Thread for your script-related questions
That's what the "Interaction-test" and "Interaction-prep" rules are about. I colored all of the stationary objects one color to start out, and the glider another "plague" color, and made it so that even a temporary touch from glider cells will spread the "plague" color to the stationary objects. Th...

Re: Thread for your script-related questions
I continued the investigations on the current octo3obj database. "buildconst3obj-comments.py" generated 1,624,450 constellations of three objects in a 11x11 bounding box. Does it mean that less than three collisions on average were stored for each orientation of each constellation ? I must be missi...

Re: Thread for basic questions
How large would an unnamed (34,7)c/156 spaceship made out of OEOP metacells be? Just curious. Wouldn't that be the dimensions of that unnamed spaceship multiplied by the dimensions of one zero-encoded-by-zero-population metacell ? I think that would be, in some phases, 2093884899025 x 1649127980753...

Re: Thread for basic questions
What is the range of patterns etc that can be constructed by means of glider synthesis? Almost all, but Gardens of Eden or solutions to the grandfather problem. Clarification: That "almost all" answer doesn't give the right impression, for four reasons. One, almost all sufficiently-large random pat...

Re: Thread for your script-related questions
I'm having some problems using "find-full-participation-collisions_v3.py". Where can I find the ruletables for "Interaction-test" and "Interaction-prep"? Hmm. That might need some forensic work on old backups, though I remember what they did and could _probably_ rewrite them correctly from scratch....

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
If you modify and save the pattern then the rule is maintained since it's still in the comments. Aha, that seems like a key point. Modifying then saving a pattern seems like it will be an important use case. Persisting the rule in the comments seems to handle that. Copying a piece out of a pattern ...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
4) ignore Golly's stored rule and use the rule from the pattern comments and open the pattern. In this case on first opening it would need to do something like write a renamed version of rule from the pattern comments to the rule folder, modify the pattern header and @RULE name in the pattern comme...

Re: Very large 'awesome' patterns
But this time it's something completely different. Although it's still an infinite growth pattern... I know, all isn't perfect but it gave me another opportunity to practice pattern construction. This one actually does match what people around here tend to think of when they hear "infinite growth p...

Re: Thread for your script-related questions
Is it a bug or normal behaviour ? Seems like three-block shifter is indeed missing. I unsuccessfully tried to lookup each of 8 orientations of another phase. It should be in octo3obj, because a "nearby" collision (same 3-block constellation) is there: x = 8, y = 9, rule = B3/S23 2o3bo$2ob2o$4b2o5$2...

Re: Faster 2c/3 Wires
This search found another interesting result with two objects that are rebuildable from two two-glider collisions... It's better than that. Two two-glider collisions means precisely synchronizing four "rebuild" signals, or at least synchronizing two pairs of signals precisely with each other, plus ...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
If a rule with the same name already exists things get awkward. It needs to be ignored but there's no tidy way I can see to do this in Golly from scripts. It would be a little bit fiddly, but it doesn't seem impossible to check that the @RULE appended to the pattern is character-for-character ident...

Re: One Glider Seeds
Oh thanks for your time :) it's nice to have other QB seeds then a ship. Similarly it would be nice to have more hershel seeds. Currently I know just 4 (2nd variant of boat with blinker not included ... actually they produce H+2 rather to H). (of course pslmake is a big storage of p1/p2 seeds, but ...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
Anybody planning to add the @RULE-loading functionality? I should have a first attempt at fixing up the "toSuper", "toHistory", and "toStandard" Lua scripts checked in a little later today -- the simple starter option, along these lines . Then I'm planning to go and wrestle with pattern files again ...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
I'm sure there should be a confirmation popup, either way. You've implied that you're sure about that because "I already ran into multiple cases where there is an appended ruledata, but I don't really want to use that ruledata; I just want to copy the pattern into Golly." Can you please give some m...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
These cases aren't "hypothetical". I already ran into multiple cases where there is an appended ruledata, but I don't really want to use that ruledata; I just want to copy the pattern into Golly. It's perfectly possible that you've got a use case there that I simply haven't been able to imagine. Ca...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
I still think there should be a pop-up warning/confirmation message, before any attempts to use/save the rule data (if any). This would be more user-friendly, because you are not doing something that is likely to be unexpected. I'm not sure I understand the use case that you're worried about here. ...

Re: One Glider Seeds
Here's a trial rebuild along the lines suggested in the last post, which pulls the pieces 3 full diagonals closer. 25 still lifes, so only four more than the version where the pieces weren't quite close enough together. Here the Simkin glider gun can be trivially adjusted to be a little farther away...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
Additionally, a Golly user may already have a "cosmetic" modification of the same rulefile (e.g. different palette; added comments) in their user rule directory. In that case, the existing rulefile should be used and should not be replaced. Andrew's post mentioned "(but only if there is no existing...
