Re: Period 3 oscillator

Entity Valkyrie 2 wrote:Stator variants aren't new oscillators, unless the period is 2.
They are "new oscillators", no matter what the period might be, but there appears to be little to no public interest in cataloging and trying to understand them.

Re: Squiggles

Interesting. Here's a not well thought out game idea-- Use two or three colors for the black blobs. If I calculate correctly, there would be 90 tiles with two colors, 300 with three, and 1400 with four. Then the object of a two person (or more?) game would be to build a complete four tile pattern, d...

Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

The oscillator is known, found by Merzenich years ago. My records for large oscillators aren't organized enough to say if a construction is known. A quick search didn't find one.

Back up all the Gliders until they are coming from infinity. I tried that and this appears to be valid.

LifeViewer cutting and pasting issue

I'm trying to track down a problem I'm having between LifeViewer and an app I'm working on. On a webpage, I try to copy a pattern that's being displayed by using "ctrl-c". I then get that string and attempt to paste it into by app. There's nothing but an empty string. This is an iOS app, so I've loo...

Re: Catagolue Oddities

Apgsearch must be missing that the spaceship is destroyed by debris, which may be to do with the fact the debris appears behind the ship and not in front of it, so the algorithm may be automatically assuming the spaceship gets away because there's nothing in front of it. When I was doing collision ...

This thread should be moved from the Sandbox to the Patterns section, so it doesn't get lost.

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

learn how to just run these patterns on paper or in your head (which I believe some of the "gods of old" are able to do) Back before computers, I did use up lots of graph paper (and erasers were cheaper than new paper). Still have some of that around here somewhere. At some point it did become unne...

Correct. RIght now I have to open up Golly, paste it, reselect it, find and run the conversion script, and then I finally have something that can be read by older programs.

You need to add a way to copy the starting pattern as just a simple RLE, removing the LifeHistory, or LifeUltra extensions.

Re: Realizing still life constraints as a planar tiling

(skipping over the recent posting)

I like the split dots better. With the petals, it isn't entirely obvious which quadrants are contributing. The split dots show that orthogonally, it takes two tiles to contribute, but only one diagonally.

I like those tiles. Now you’ve given me another project to consume my time— make a application that allows for the manipulation of these tiles, as some sort of puzzle. Would be interesting to have the matrix displayed showing all the currently legal tiles that can be placed, or have an semi-auto ran...

A bit late, but here's a database dump of 7808 unique P2 rotors. (if I did the SQL query correctly...) Some are huge and redundant. One line per object, tab delimited with Hickerman's rotor descriptor, wcode and rle.

As part of his work on de Bruijn diagrams, McIntosh did some work on Period 2 Phoenixes. I can't find the paper itself, but I do have about 150 pages of color printouts in a couple of bound folders from 1996 that he sent me way back then showing the strips up to width of 12 and how they fit together...

Re: Help me finish this c/8 search

You'd need to create an XCode CommandLine project with the sourcecode, then replace the Open_MP calls with GCD calls. Several years ago I hacked up apgnano that way, and it was only changed in about two places. For the hell of it, I just built that project and ran it, and it appears to have worked a...

Is it possible to do an asymmetrical search starting with a significant number of defined rows? I noticed this in the P8H3V0 | 3c/8 search results published the other day. Okay. Was just updating my files by adding the larger pseudo-oscillators and it being missing popped out in the sanity checks.

And it is a bit of an outlier, and easy to overlook.

EDIT:

Here's another problem:

20p3.39 xp3_0q52z122qbgzy256
21p3.86 xp3_0q52z122qbgzy256

It's a 20P3.

Thanks for reminding me that I'd forgotten to restart my searches when I got back from a trip last month. I prefer to only run them in the winter months when the processor heat contributes to the inside temperature instead of being something the air conditioning has to remove.
