You could try to limit calls to the code to speed it up by "compiling" the ruletable once and automatically adding a tree to the file with the code in it (same sort of operation as the existing "clean up old rules"), but it would still have to be run to do that, so fair concern. Isn't it sideways? The spaceships escape at +/- 90 degrees relative to the direction of the rake. I thought about that, but sideways rakes don't really exist in Life, so I thought it doesn't have its own name. ??? Why not using c orthogonal or diagonal when no photon exists?
A bit non-uniform (if the scrolling is horizontal, some rows get burned more than others) and slightly boring (I wanted to do oblique movement).
