Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread

Here's a partial c/7 that I found from searching ships with width 11 gutter symmetry: Logical width 11 seems wide as a starting place for c/7. I don't think anyone's ever tried to find a gutter-symmetric c/7 orthogonal ship at logical width 10 (full width 21). Any such search would find two loafers...

I just received another banhammer threat, which I do not see why I need it. Also, users have been using derogatory terms on me. I have moved this post to a more appropriate location. If you believe other users are using derogatory terms, please report it to the moderators as soon as you can. Also, ...

Re: 2x2

Sokwe, qfind appears to output spaceships in ascending order of length, does it conduct a breadth-first search and guarantee minimal length? It runs a breadth-first search, but also uses depth-first look ahead to prune. If it finds a ship during the depth-first look ahead it will print it, and this...

Re: qfind - a spaceship search program

Thanks! I assume by the .exe extension that you are on Windows. Did you use the pre-compiled version available here , or did you compile it yourself? If you compiled it yourself, can you tell me what compiler you used and any compiler flags you included? Yeah, it's precompiled. Thanks again! When y...

What row did you start from? There's that loose connection so that I suspect a width-10 odd-symmetric search from the following row (highlighted white) might give alternate solutions (assuming you didn't start from there).... I'd try the search myself, but my "4-core and 7 years ago" laptop for som...

When looking through honey-farm-hasslers.rle in the Golly pattern collection, I noticed that many of them aren't on the honey farm hasslers or honey farm shuttles wiki pages. Here are the patterns that seem like they should be added: x = 488, y = 435, rule = B3/S23 35b2o6b2o$31b2obobo6bobob2o$29bo2b...

I used qfind to extend my partial, and I ended up with this Awesome! Since you have a 12-core pc, make sure you are using the -t option to set the appropriate number of threads. What row did you start from? There's that loose connection so that I suspect a width-10 odd-symmetric search from the fol...

The absolute ideal is probably a fuse ignition by a passing p4 catalyst-type ship... Is it too much to hope for a lucky still life output from the fuse-burning-ending reaction? E.g. if it could leave a loaf by the back end of the now-unlit-fuse like so... x = 109, y = 177, rule = B3/S23 8b2o$7b2o$9...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

I tried a b2f search for a 3c/7 back rake, as crazy a long shot as that is. I still think the following idea might be the best shot at a p7 backrake: Here's an idea for finding a period-7 3c/7 rake that might be feasible: The glider releasing reaction in the p21 rake is more reliant on the spark fr...

Re: Thread for basic questions

Would it be possible to give a reasonably detailed summary/outline (aimed towards beginners) of what kinds of searches are feasible with current software tools, as a function of available computing resources and willingness to wait for the result? This is getting a little beyond "basic" questions. ...

#C A diagonal c/4 period 76 sideways rake. ... Thanks! I thought it must be possible, and now we've already justified the existence of this new and absurdly large puffer engine. The c/4 diagonal status table was starting to get a bit too green, which belies the fact that we don't know much above th...

Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread

I got something like the second solved but it's not clear if it will actually be useful as the branches on that back (east) side are pretty big and possibly in the way. Wow, that's some crazy branching! However, I think it will be useful. The following high-period chaotic puffer seems to have a bas...

I have fixed the issue with the Tumbling T-tetsons; it is now in the p8 section. I have also moved a few more oscillators around since they were mis-categorized. Thanks, but now the rule says "OtherLifeHistory", which gives a LifeViewer error. While I could duplicate Karel's p15 into the "delayed d...

here is my current stamp collection of p3-16 sparkers, sorted by period and spark type. (Some sparkers that give off multiple sparks appear multiple times in this collection) Great work! Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

I am curious what holds it up. The greatest historical impediment to LLSSS search effectiveness has been memory limits but it's gotten a lot better with the one-bit-at-a-time changes and these days I am doing most of my human-guided solving with searches limited to 8 GB (I have other, longer, less-...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

Alternate back edges to the recent c/4 diagonal puffer engine with slightly different sparks could give variant puffer engines that behave differently. Here are two related partial results, the first probably being easier to solve, but the second giving a more resilient engine: x = 168, y = 29, rule...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

I guess it just seems rather hemmed in, stuck searching upward, and subjectively the rate at which search results were lengthening with widening windows seemed poor. Alas it's crummy subjective metrics all the way down. I feel like it wouldn't be too hard to move that center branch out of the way o...

That sparker with that clearance is quite demanding. Some preliminary searches (8 GB) do find longish partials but they don't look very nice to me (mostly wide and mostly getting wider as they go), e.g.: x = 74, y = 53, rule = B3/S23 28b2o$27b2o$29bo$31b2o$30bo2$29bo2bo$26b2obo$25b2o4bo$27bobo2bo$3...
