### Re: Two Alternating Rules

Alternating2 seems to have a few interesting properties: - Both the basic oscillator from this rule and the oscillator generated by the long puffer found by Wojowu, as well as most of the body of the long puffer itself (its behaviour is certainly defined by this) seem to be a part of a wider family ...

Okay, this one's a bit better. Just noticed that Generations rule 345/37/4 has a p32 7-by-8 knightpuffer: x = 5, y = 5, rule = 345/37/4 .3A\$4A\$2ACB\$.ACAC\$.BAB! That one was posted at the thread for 3458/37/4 . It's nice to know that it also works sans S8. Quoting ynotds from that thread, it turns i...

B016/S12: A self-complementary rule, the behavior of a pattern in an even generation is the same as that of the negative pattern in an odd generation and vice versa. If I recall correctly, that property is common to every B0/D8 rule. I've been trying to make a greyship with your attempt with no luc...

The c/5 1D spaceship is surprisingly small:

Code: Select all

EDIT: And it has a 2D tagalong!

11bo3bo4\$o12bo\$o12bo\$o12bo3\$o12bo3\$o12bo4\$o12bo3\$o12bo3\$o12bo!

### Re: B0/D8 rulespace

My reaction exactly. I don't think a spaceship of width 1 in what is tecnically a 2D automaton had been found before. David Eppstein' smaller gliders list (from his CA database) lists a 2x2 diagonal glider as the smaller glider. Then again, 1x50 isn't exactly small, it's more like thin. I should try...

### Re: B0/D8 rulespace

You're not going to believe this. On the rule that Extrementhusiast just posted, there's a c/4 orthogonal spaceship. Of width 1. No, I'm not making it up. I found it with gfind. x = 1, y = 50, rule = B026/S1 o4\$o\$o\$o4\$o3\$o2\$o3\$o4\$o3\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o\$o3\$o3\$o\$o\$o5\$o\$o! Obviously, this rule emulates...

Starting with a single dot, this rule creates an intricate mosaic using only five distinct "pieces" every (2^n) - 1 generations, separated by a simple margin, leaving absolutely no holes. I think Extrementhusiast (?) tried it. I think he called it BTS, and it stands for Birth-Then-Survival. Those two are not connected/interacting with each other at all Since they travel only one cell away from each other in one spot, I thought they form a pseudo-spaceship just as two blocks which are one cell away form a pseudo-stilllife. ### Problem with gfind

I compiled gfind on my Mac (OSX 10.6) using gcc with no special arguments. The problem is that, when it discovers symmetrical patterns, it outputs them with a lot of ON cells on the right side. This doesn't bother me when it's an orthogonal spaceship, but with diagonal spaceships it gets tiresome to...

Wow, great discovery, knightship! I like where this is going.

I'm still not convinced about the definitions. For example, is an ant a linear spaceship at c velocity? You can easily see what I mean on a width 5 torus.
