Edit: False alarm, must have been user error. The Tampermonkey editor flags some things in the script as errors but it looks like it works anyway.

Re: Soup search results in rules other than Conway's Life

Hot on the heels of Rich's p16, here's a p18. It even has a certain family resemblance (D2_+1 symmetry, shuttle behavior). But it's in B357/S23, not B3/S23.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 5, rule = B357/S23

I take it back. :( There's a bug somewhere in the RLE conversion. Look at http://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp120_y977w77zooyooozzy977w77/b38s23 . RLE starts with "13b2o2b2o13b" and should end with same; instead it ends with "13b2ob2o14b". At least when I use the script it does. The full RLE I get...

perhaps the smallest LWSS predecessor: Don't think so. 10 cells can create infinite growth - which occurs 1/100K. LWSS happens 1/K. 8 bits should suffice for all the *WSS types. Search for Rs + blinker/protoblock, or simply random 8 bitters. It might be the smallest by bounding box area. If you're ...

Re: Searching every NxN pattern for oscs/patterns?

More generally, http://oeis.org/A054247 . For n >~ 5, it gets pretty close to 2^{(n^2)}/8, because almost every random soup has no symmetry so is equivalent to 7 others under rotations and reflections. I wrote about this a while back here: https://mathematrec.wordpress.com/2015/10/25/a054247/ . For ...

The speed of light is determined by the size of the neighborhood. Change the neighborhood, change c.

Of course, the size of the space of possible cell+neighbors configurations goes like, m^(n^2)? (m = # states, n = size of square neighborhood).
