Re: Proposed home page refresh

How to move this forward? Nothing you can do but wait, sadly. I was hoping to have a few days for this project in the January 1 - January 9 window, which I thought would be between when the book project ended and my new crazy-busy semester started, but sadly the book project isn't quite wrapped up ...

Re: Case sensitivity in wiki search suggestions

It looks like upgrading MedaiWiki to the newest version (1.37 from the current 1.33) should fix the namespace issue. Hopefully it'll fix the autocomplete for pages with dots in the name issue too. However, I'm currently out of town so I can't do an update like that right now. Will aim to do it aroun...

Re: Case sensitivity in wiki search suggestions

Related 2, is it possible to remove stuff like the lower character limit from forum searches? Unfortunately, I don't think so. This issue has come up quite a few times, and I've never found a good solution. phpBB unfortunately is... less than optimal when it comes to searching. I have the forum set...

Re: Case sensitivity in wiki search suggestions

Related, is it possible to remove hyphen and space sensitivity as well? This is possible, but much more difficult to set up. The standard way to do this on a wiki is to change the search engine used by MediaWiki to something like Elasticsearch , which requires extra software to be installed on the ...

Re: Case sensitivity in wiki search suggestions

I've looked into it, and this seems like it should be a doable change. Seems like a fairly benign change, but I might as well ask anyway: any objections?

Re: Beta Reader Thread for Game of Life Textbook

In general, new terms are shown in boldface the first time they're used (only), which is also the first place they're listed in the index. Yep, bold text indicates a definition or that you likely haven't seen this term before. "Long boat" and "long snake" are both bolded (i.e., defined) earlier, on...

Re: Moving pages in LifeWiki

I'm not sure if this is a caching problem but the option to leave a redirect behind doesn't seem to be present. Nope, not a caching problem. Rather, it was a "Nathaniel is incompetent" problem. Anyway, fixed now -- now "trusted" members of the wiki can actually move pages without leaving a redirect...

Re: Beta Reader Thread for Game of Life Textbook

I'm curious about what didn't work here. It seems to work for me when compiling with MikTeX through TeXworks. I didn't add any options to any packages either. I simply made the single-line change that I proposed in the quoted post. Of course, this is an extremely low priority, so feel free to ignor...

Re: Moving pages in LifeWiki

I can tell that at least in these cases the redirect has a chance to be unnecessary: 1)those involving at least one User page, including moving from main to User ( example talk on the issue ), vice versa ( these two ), and moving inside User namespace; 2)those between different namespaces in genera...

Re: Like button in forum request

I also think that the sprites for the like button should be switched, where it would be hollow by default and filled in when you like a post. This would give liked posts a higher contrast with the rest of the page, and stand out relative to other posts. May I request a feature: Swap colors of the d...

Re: Moving pages in LifeWiki

I'm not opposed to letting all "trusted" members of the wiki move pages without leaving a redirect behind. However, does anyone else want to weigh in first, before I make that change? Also, can you give an example of when a "move" redirect is counterproductive (in my mind, we basically always want t...

Re: LifeLine Magazine?

Does anyone have a clearer scan of Lifeline Volume 2 Page 6 ? The image in the lower left corner is hard to see in the wiki scan. For what it's worth, I just checked my hardcopy, and it's no better (it looks exactly like the scan). Not sure if it's just a problem with my hardcopy, or if it was a pr...

Re: Beta Reader Thread for Game of Life Textbook

I don't mean to speak for the authors, but it seems to me they've avoided talking much about particular Life software in favor of discussing the concepts on which the software would be based. For example, the ideas behind Jason Summers' and David Raucci's spark-assisted oscillator searches are esse...

...and we're back. Sorry about the massive downtime today. Really unfortunate timing on our server move -- this was apparently the longest downtime ever in the 14-year history of the new webhost.

Re: Changing Server

This may or may not be related to the server change. I now get a 403 error when I try to access a user subpage that includes quotation marks in the title. I'm not 100% sure what's happening here, but I think it's a MediaWiki bug that was introduced in version 1.26 that only affects certain types of...

There are some issues with login. Thanks for reporting these. I know what causing these problems, but I'll need a bit of time to fix it. Will hopefully happen tomorrow. Edit: Should be fixed now. Thanks, Nathaniel! I have had no problems yet, but during the move (around 8:00 AM), I got access to tw...

Re: Changing Server

Please read this I read it, and I'll do my best. It's hosted in a similar geographical location to the previous (i.e., current) web server, and no metadata/URL stuff will change, so I don't see any reason that it should be blocked in China. But I don't know how/why to *actually* be sure of somethin...

Changing Server

The web host that ConwayLife.com has been using for the last 10 or so years is going out of business and closing up shop on September 15, 2021. So this site will have to change servers before then. I am tentatively planning on doing the server move on August 24, 2021, but that's not 100% set in ston...

Nathaniel never said that that was intentional by the way.
I'll say it now: it was intentional. I don't want the like system to be a way for people to accumulate points, or try to get a high score, or anything like that.
