Re: Live Free or Die

It would be very cool to stabilize that pattern. Jason Summers managed to do it in Seeds (where the wave itself is identical): x = 262, y = 262, rule = B2/S 123b2o12b2o$122bo16bo$125bo10bo$130b2o$124bobo2bo2bo2bobo$120b2o3bo10b o3b2o$119bo8b2o2b2o8bo$118bo2bo6b2o2b2o6bo2bo$117bo5b2o3b2o2b2o3b2o5bo $...

Re: Thread for Explaining your Avatars

Mine is an anchor track, one of the more interesting oscillators in Live Free or Die (s0/b2). This one is the smallest iteration and is p12, but they are extensible and can have any period 4 * 2^n - 4.

Re: Live Free or Die

Hi again, The small tagalong you posted is catalogued as the buffalo bird. It's remarkably versatile: it can be attached to the dust mite ship, crab ship, rhino ship, elephant ship, and Eppstein's slow ship as well as the spaceships and rake you posted (in other words, a large majority of the known ...

Re: Live Free or Die

I've added a page for the spaceships as a group and a separate page for the rake to the wiki: they are the buffalo ships and buffalo rake. The buffalo rake is now the smallest known c/2 puffer or rake. I'm planning to release an updated version of the file collection soon, which will include all the...

Re: Golly crashes on saving on OS X 10.9

Thanks Andrew. You may not need this information anymore, but I get the crash on File > Open Pattern, and not on Control > Set Generation or Layer > Set Layer Colors. Ready 0.6 doesn't crash.

I've finished cataloguing these new patterns. They are the hippo rake, zipper rake, plow trailer, combine trailer, hex rake, sparkler, big six shooter stack, shortwave, and longwave. Good stuff!

All we need is a p19 oscillator? That's easy...

Nice! I believe that's only the second known rake/puffer slower than c, after your c/5 backrake: x = 57, y = 18, rule = s0/b2 42bo$43bo$2bo7bo20bo23bo$3bo7bo9bo15bobo16bo$14bo9bo7bob2obo6bo$9bo7bo 3bo9bo3bo3bo13bo2bo$4bo2bobo2b2o3bo3b2o5bo2b2o7b2o2b2o6b2obo$bo9bo2bo 3b3obob3o8bobo6bo6bo$o2b2o30bo3bo...

Re: Golly crashes on saving on OS X 10.9

I'm still running into this. When I download the latest build of Golly, it's able to save a pattern file exactly once. Subsequent saves crash with the attached message. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Luke

One-cell growth per generation

I was intrigued by this pattern by Nicolay Beluchenko, a tubstretcher that grows by exactly one cell per generation: x = 17, y = 15, rule = B3/S23 8b2o7b$7b2o8b$9bo7b$11b2o4b$10bo6b2$9bo2b2o3b$b2o5b2o4bo2b$2o5bo5bo3b$ 2bo4bobo3b2o2b$4bo2bo4b2obob$4b2o7b2o2b$8bo4bob2o$7bobo2bob2ob$8bo! Not wildly interesting, but the 'ball pit' extensible p2 oscillator from Seeds and Live Free or Die works here too. x = 68, y = 27, rule = B25678/S4578 4bo3bo19bo3bo19bo3bo$2bo2b3o2bo15bo2b3o2bo15bo2b3o2bo$b2o7b2o13b2o7b2o 13b2o7b2o2$o4b3o4bo11bo4b3o4bo11bo4b3o4bo$bo2bo3bo2bo13bo2bo3bo2bo13bo 2bo3bo...

Re: Live Free or Die

Hi all, I've decided to offer cash prizes for certain discoveries in Live Free or Die. They are: $25.00 for any spaceship of an undiscovered speed. Currently known speeds are c, c/2, 2c/5, c/4, and c/5 orthogonal, and c/4 diagonal. $25.00 for any moon reflector, that is, a stable or oscillating patt...

Finding Gardens of Eden

Hi all, What's the best way to look for Gardens of Eden in a Life-like CA, e.g. Live Free or Die (s0/b2)? Does anyone have tools for this purpose? I suspect that there are very small orphans and CAs in this rule but before I brute-force search, I thought I'd see if anyone knows a better method. Than...

Re: Glider Syntheses in Other Rules

Live Free or Die (s0/b2) has this fun one, using two small p1 spaceships (moons) to construct a p19 oscillator, the monster. The moon is only four cells and the only p1 spaceship in the rule. What I find cool about this reaction is that the evolution of the monster actually contains a few phases in ...
