Re: Massive spam attacks on the wiki (and forums?)

For now I've restricted LifeWiki editing access to "trusted" users until we can figure out what the hell happened and a more proper fix. Sorry about this -- this is by far the most ridiculous spam attack this site's ever had. Edit: I changed the SPAM-prevention questions, but the spammers were not h...

Re: What is the pattern in the lifewiki logo?

You're on the right track with the R-pentomino, but it's a larger pattern that uses an R-pentomino in a reaction (and might be too tough to guess honestly, since the only other clues are the block at the top-left and a few other cells that are wrong at the top-right).

It's actually a block (squint really closely -- you're probably just seeing the right 2 cells in the block).

Re: What is the pattern in the lifewiki logo?

Yep, it is (part of) a particular generation of a pattern that has a page on LifeWiki. And it is 100% accurate.

All lines of sufficiently high length (about 350 cells or more) emit gliders in very predictable ways and thus won't die off completely. So you just need to check the lines with length smaller than that.

Re: Possible new type of category to define ships/oscillators?

There are (reasonably) small oscillators with extremely high period. The following oscillator by Dave Greene has periodic density 1618/103079214841 = 0.0000000157, but isn't *that* interesting: x = 297, y = 227, rule = B3/S23 193b2o72b2o$193bo73bo$194bo73bo$182bo10b2o61bo10b2o$182b3o71b3o$185bo 73bo...

Re: Thread for your unsure discoveries

23334M which is listed as a 12 cell methuselah, has this 11 cell equivalent form in the same 5-by-8 bounding box (original to the left, 11 cell form to the right): I'm quite certain that this is new, and that the previous 11-cell record holder was indeed bunnies 11 (17465 generations). Just letting you know that the 64-bit version works fine (or at least launches and has let me do minor tinkering so far) for me on Windows 10, so it is indeed something more specific than that.

Re: Like button in forum request

I'm happy to consider this feature if enough people are in support of the idea, but my personal opinion is against it. In my experience on other forums, things like Like buttons tend to encourage "low-effort" or "obvious" content that is easily Like-able. Maybe that wouldn't actually be a problem he...

Re: Unused Forum IDs

Yep, the way these forums work is that each of the "categories" of forums also get a forum ID (so those first three IDs you posted are the three different forum categories). The last one is indeed a private forum for moderators/administrators.

Well, since we have a forum for this type of stuff now, I might as well throw my hat in the ring: My name's Nathan Johnston, and I became interested in Life back in high school (2001 or 2002) when it was given as an assignment in a computer programming course. I started this website during my PhD, a...

Somewhat irrelevant, but the wiki also keeps repeating the same featured articles over and over, we should write more snippets. If anyone wants to write more snippets, feel free to do so and then just message me and I'll insert them into the front page rotation. To do it, just go to create the snip...

Re: Forum/wiki integration

Maybe the underscores are prohibited in LifeWiki page titles so there aren't any problems? Entering John_Conway, for example, in the search box leads to John Conway with no redirections. Yeah, this is one of the "quirks" of the MediaWiki software: it treats underscores and spaces as *identical* in ...

Re: Incomplete proof, please help!

The argument looks good so far, however it is indeed going to have to change a bit to proceed much farther. The problem is that you can continue "snaking around" forever(?), so this type of argument will never end. For example, you can continue extending your polyomino like this: 0 0 0 0 0 a b 0 0 0...

Big thanks to Chris for tracking down the bug. I've updated the CSS files with sizes 10pt, 12pt, and 14pt, and it looks much better to me now. Not sure why 12pt looked more "right" to me than 11pt -- presumably some other CSS file in the mess that is phpBB was over-riding the 11pt from print.css wit...

Yep, dvgrn is right -- messages in the outbox are just messages that haven't been read yet. You can continue to edit them (or even delete them) while they are in the outbox. If your outbox being too full was causing you posting problems, I've raised the private message limit to 100 messages, up from...
