Re: LifeSuper rule

As for use cases involving all cell states, we could for example use it to annotate a theoretical period-19 gun or something which can only be constructed using special cells. Sure, but that honestly needs only one label cell state. It definitely seems like a reasonable idea to tack [R]Extended ont...

Re: Multiple Neighborhood Cellular Automata (MNCA) - Slackermanz

Here is file RuleTreeGen.java... Just replace the Life definition in int f(int[] a) with an MNCA rule definition, compile and run. Unless I'm missing something here, anything that generates a Golly rule tree is currently going to be limited to von Neumann or Moore range-1 neighborhoods (four or eig...

Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

If we follow the usual guidelines, the discoverer gets to name the discovery. Makes sense, but what about the object being hassled? Good point. I won't venture an opinion about that. My approach would be "wait a year and see if anyone ever mentions it again after that, and then see what they call i...

Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

I think we should probably decide on an official name for the object first. "U-turner" always makes me think of something turning a "U". If we follow the usual guidelines, the discoverer gets to name the discovery. That happened a while ago, and the name is Raucci's p217 . Not sure everybody notice...

Re: Golly suggestions

dvgrn, should I continue updating the oscillator page or not? You said you were changing the comments, and if I update it, we would have two separate versions that would be hard to merge. Please go ahead and make your changes. The edits I've made so far are just in places like the header section, a...

Re: Thread for your website-related questions

An offshoot of the original "counting patterns" thread from an hour ago, this one specifically focuses on patterns that as a whole grow logarithmically as they count... The new thread linked above got reported just now, with the text I don't think this topic is important to make a new thread and it...

Re: 2c/4 Flyby Reactions

Probably unnecessary clarification: I personally think that the above rules of thumb are implied by the long history of these things in Caterloopillars, puffers-turned-into-rakes, etc. But I don't think there's really any one person who could say anything absolutely true about what's individually no...

Re: (2c/4) Flyby Reactions

... do we have some appropriate evaluation scheme that can tell whether a particular 2c/4 fly-by reaction is notable or not? Is it limited to obvious ones like small bounding box and small number of spaceships? (Also, I suggest moving this topic to the Patterns board and change its title so as to s...

Re: Thread for your website-related questions

I'm not sure if this is a me thing, a viewer thing or a forum thing, but the rules featured in this post really don't seem to be recognised as valid despite existing in the rule namespace, and opening a viewer from another post and manually switching to such an rule makes it load for probably etern...

Re: Thread for your website-related questions

Can't say I've found any new bugs with LifeViewer ruletable loading that can be traced to this so far. There does seem to be a formatting error that arises in the box for certain rulestrings though, which seemingly also breaks the link: https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Rule:TriVN-B123x2_S1_emulated ...

I'm currently obscurely bothered by the fact that every single one of my seven thousand eight hundred and nineteen posts has exactly zero likes. Re: Who proved the universality of the GoL ?

It also seems that we have to draw a clear line between two properties :a) the Turing-universality of the model, that is, the ability to compute any algorithm, and b) the self-replication ability (including the self-replication of a Turing machine). I have to read again the arguments exposed above ...

Hello everyone, I am writing an article from the French online magazine Interstices : https://interstices.info/ I would like to know who proved that the Game of Life is Turing-universal. Until recently I thought that the proof was first published in Winning ways , vol. 4 by Berlekamp, Conway & Guy ...

On a side note, n -snark is kinda ugly, maybe we can call them crystal snarks or something instead? I guess they're still a bit big and slow compared to the snark so maybe that term isn't the best... Yeah, the main meaning of "Snark" is "90-degree reflector", and when you add "semi", "tremi", etc. ...
