There was also a 9-cell diehard lasting 215 generations discovered in 2009: http://www.conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=85&p=453#p446 Unfortunately, the original diehard had one (unfa...

Re: Golly 3.0b2
I just noticed that the survival (and presumably the same thing happens with the birth) conditions of Larger than Life rules are converted to the equivalent values modulo 2^32 between -2^31 and 2^31 - 1. This has some interesting consquences, such as how R1,C0,M0,S-4294967294..-4294967293,B3..3,NM i...

Re: Golly 2.8 vs. Ubuntu 17.04
Okay, so I had previously only installed Golly 3.0 on Windows, but now I installed it on Ubuntu as well and the empty box glitch seems to be happening way more frequently than on 2.8. On one Ubuntu 16.04 (my dad's, but I use it frequently), the bug happened about 3/5 of the time, and on another Ubun...

Re: Catagolue Oddities
It doesn't work that way. If it did, this page would have only one object on it. For wickstretchers, everything touching the wick is considered part of the pattern. I think that distinguishing them this way is more natural, because the debris can't be classified as a still life, oscillator or spaces...

I have this problem too. After it happens, the window cannot be closed except by killing the process. I have lost over ten windows of Golly to this today alone. Actually, I have had this for years. Not to divert this thread from its original point, but today I noticed another Golly problem on Ubuntu...

Re: Golly scripts
Here is a script to generate a stamp collection of all objects found on Catagolue in a particular rule/symmetry, by frequency, excluding infinite-growth patterns. I first wrote it two years ago, but updated it to reflect more recent developments in the history of Catagolue (i.e., SS symmetry, non-to...

Also, when Golly or LifeViewer forget the strobe lights in B0/S-8 rules. LifeViewer for the forums originally had them, but they got removed at popular request (not mine, though). I would have preferred it if they had gotten rid of them by making the default step size for a B0/S-8 pattern two, beca...

I can't be the only one who finds it weird and confusing that there exists no star polyhedron {5/2,5/2}? Wikipedia says it counts as a failed star polyhedron, since it doesn't eventually close. I think I can explain this. It looks like I'm turning into "that one guy who always answers when people h...

1. Rename a tkinter window/make a window title other than "tk" from Tkinter import * root = Tk() root.title("Your title goes here.") I've been using Swampy's GUI module, which inherits from Tkinter, so this example might not work; but changing the title of a window is such a basic operation that it...

I've been annoying (I didn't say that) people with these problems: f(6) = 3 f(12) = 6 f(24) = ? (it's not 12) g(-15) = 15 g(-17) = 17 g(-19) = ? (it's not 19) h(15 + 2i) = 15 h(16 + 4i) = 16 h(17 + 6i) = 17 h(18 + 8i) = 18 h(19 + 10i) = ? (it's not 19) It's simpler than you think... Spoiler: 10, 16...

From the Rules: 2b. Foul language/profanity is not acceptable here. I'm pretty sure that rule was put in place to keep this environment feeling academic. With that in mind, I feel it's likely Nathaniel would make an exception to the profanity rule if it was used as part of the name of a programming...

Say there is a flat world of 2D squares on an infinite flat plane. Each square sees in 1D, meaning it can only see the sides/perimeter of it's friends. One day, a magical 3D cube approaches a 2D square. The cube asks the square if he wants to go to the 3rd Dimension. Being a smart square and a math...

For me, one of the most memorable experiences would have to be from this thread . Gustavo had just posted a 2-glider destruction of a long ship in HighLife.
