Re: New forums menu bar
I believe these issues are now all taken care of. You might need to refresh your browser to make everything appear correctly.

Conway's Game of Life Textbook Launch
The textbook is finally done, and today is official book launch day! The book can be downloaded in PDF format from https://conwaylife.com/book/conway_life_book.pdf (the same place that early versions of it were hosted for beta-testing). A physical version of the book can now be purchased from lulu.c...

Re: Proposed home page refresh
The new homepage is now live at https://conwaylife.com . That doesn't mean I'm done updating/fixing it/implementing other things people have requested. I have also protected https://conwaylife.com/wiki/ConwayLife.com:HomepagePatterns so that only administrators can edit it (though non-administrators...

Re: Pattern viewer for forum threads
If I remember right, the process would be to update lv-plugin.js in this GitHub folder , and then let Nathaniel know to propagate the changes to the /ref folder on the server. I've done the first, but not the second yet. I forget -- is there a (good) reason for having conwaylife.com/ref point to it...

Re: Proposed home page refresh
Both changed/fixed now.
That's doable -- I'll try to get that done later today.
Edit: Done now.

Re: Proposed home page refresh
Looks nice, but two points I noted first; 1) Is the RLE header preserved intentionally for the possibility of including non-plain-Life patterns (eg. bounded grids or OCA)? 2) What are the standard settings for style/theme/viewerconfig? 1) There isn't a particularly good reason for the RLE headers b...

Re: Proposed home page refresh
If the "integrate with wiki" route is chosen, maybe one model could be that all of the relevant patterns could be stored as pages like RLE:Homepagepattern1 RLE:Homepagepattern2 RLE:Homepagepattern3 with each page giving the name and attribution and any comments as usual, with #N, #O, and #C comment...

Re: Pattern viewer for forum threads
That sounds like it might be consistent with LifeViewer's rule-caching feature. (?) It might be that, combined with the fact that lately LifeWiki has been tossing out database connection errors every now and then. So if LifeViewer makes a request for a rule, but LifeWiki responds with "sorry, I can...

Re: Proposed home page refresh
How much work would it to be to include the most recent moderate to major discovery (so 32P21 now) and change it every few days? This is something that I could integrate with the wiki, so that the patterns are pulled from <some page on the wiki, in some format>. However, before I go to the trouble ...

Re: Proposed home page refresh
I would suggest a separate interface for phones (not tablets). Use your phone at https://golhobby.com/test/ . When I go there on my phone, I don't see a LifeViewer at all -- is that intended? I personally hate it when my phone redirects to a different version of a website than my computer, and I ca...

Re: Proposed home page refresh
OK, here is a possible homepage replacement: https://conwaylife.com/newhome.php Feedback welcome. Currently only has two patterns available to be chosen in the LifeViewer (the one that starts off being displayed is chosen randomly on each page load), but I'll plop more in shortly. Some specific ques...

Re: Inaccessible wiki pages
Fixed now. There was a security setting on the server that was set to prevent bots from trying various nefarious things. That setting has been removed (it's not really needed anyway).

Re: Splitting up the forums further
And I forget to ask, who has/have the right to add/edit/remove tags for a topic? Moderators, the topic creator, or every forums user? The topic creator and moderators would be able to add/edit/remove tags from a topic. When creating a topic, the author would be able to type in new tags from scratch...

Re: Splitting up the forums further
OK, I'm (finally) having a more serious look at this, and I'm looking for community feedback. I'm currently planning on splitting up the forums something like this (note that this partitioning of the board has 3 "layers" since it uses subforums, which haven't been used on this site yet): ConwayLife....

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Why is "www." omitted before "conwaylife.com" as the canonical URL? Just because the "www." doesn't serve any purpose, and it's better to have *some* fixed canonical URL so as to avoid things like this CORS issue that came up recently . To be clear, "www." URLs still work here, and will always work...

Re: LifeWiki updated (current version 1.37.1)
I've made a fair number of back-end changes on the server today that should improve performance a fair bit, especially on the LifeWiki side of the site. Hopefully there are no noticeable changes other than "hey it's a bit less slow now", but let me know if you encounter any wonkiness (especially wit...

Re: Ruletable not working properly
@Nathaniel : It may be related to the recent update of LifeWiki. When the requested resource is /wiki/Rule:methlife the console is showing a CORS issue when LifeWiki is redirecting from /wiki/Rule:methlife to /wiki/Rule:Methlife . You're 100% right (and thanks for tracking it down as a CORS issue)....

LifeWiki updated (current version 1.37.1)
I just finished updating LifeWiki to the current stable release of the MediaWiki software (1.37.1). If you were using the wiki at the time, you would have noticed it wasn't super smooth (this is somewhat expected, as LifeWiki isn't a flat "out-of-the-box" wiki, but uses tons of extensions, including...

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Yeah, sorry for the error messages and weirdness. I was hoping the update would be painless, but you never really know until you actually do the update. Still working on cleaning everything up.
Edit: Update done now. See the announcement here.

Finally upgrading MW right now. Will edit this post once I'm done.
Edit: Done the upgrade. Announcement here. Unfortunately, the TitleKey extension now seems to not be working at all. I will fiddle with it more soon.

Re: LifeWiki image caching issues
If memory serves, this is a local browser caching issue (as opposed to a server-side caching issue). I believe it should be fixable by doing a "hard" refresh in your browser (Ctrl + Shift + R in Chrome, for example).
