Re: Error when moving a certain page on the wiki
Luckily the discussion topic I linked to in the first post in this thread suggests running a repopulation script which may fix the issue with page moving by bringing all the old revisions to be fully compatible with the newer version of MediaWiki: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:PopulateRevis...

Re: Expression error in Oscillators with period _ categories
Ah yeah, the DynamicPageList functionality of MediaWiki changed considerably with recent versions, and I'm not sure how to get it to do what we want there anymore. Unfortunately I think the cleanest solution at this point is to empty out that template so that it doesn't display anything at all (it u...

Re: Smaller Pi Calculator Challenge
So far I've only run this far enough to get "3.14" out, at just under 250B ticks. But the odds seem quite good that it won't do anything surprising from here on out. Very nice! Re: Updating website
I think the formating in the Forum Rules post has changed. I'm guessing that code and /code tags should be in plain text somehow, and the wiki tags shouldn't be in the code block. Fixed, thanks. This special page gives me an error: https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Special:WantedPages https://gyazo.c...

Ads have been removed. They might take an hour or so to completely deactivate due to caching issues.

Re: Updating website
I strongly object to adverting on this forum. Brian Prentice Please see this thread . I turned on ads today for non-logged-in users to see if it could reasonably sustain the bounty program mentioned there. Ads will never display if you're logged in. That said, if people still strongly object then o...

Re: Updating website
If I'm going to be quite honest, it seems a bit jarring in terms of color compared to the rest of the wiki, and also feels like it gets in the way to an extent. Maybe the links could be moved to the left sidebar? Honestly I kind of agree. I'll leave it up for at least a day though to see if anyone ...

Re: Updating website
Also, speaking of the wiki, could it be formatted so that it also has the same sort of page top layout as Home and Forums, or would this be too intrusive on the look of the wiki? I've added a bar to the wiki like the navbar on the main page and the forums pages, linking to the different sections of...

Yep, this is a result of me updating the wiki software and tinkering around with the various things that updating broke. See here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4139

Re: Like button in forum request
Now that the forums are updated, implementing this would be fairly straightforward. Any new strong opinions one way or the other? After mulling it over, I like the idea and think I would like to implement it so that every post would have a "thanks" or "like" button next to it that could be pressed (...

Re: Updating website
Yes, wiki software update is coming next. It's just a bigger undertaking since PHP itself has to be updated to run the newest version of MediaWiki. Hopefully will happen tonight, but it just depends on when I can get a chunk of time when I know I can fix problems if they arise in the upgrade process...

Anyone else having this problem? Seems fine to me.Gamedziner wrote: ↑October 2nd, 2019, 8:28 amPages in the updated forums seem to load a lot slower.
Also, I'll be updating to PHP 7.2 in a day or two, which should speed up the whole site somewhat.

Re: Bounties
Is there enough traffic on conwaylife.com to make more than pennies per year on advertising to anonymous readers? Honestly I'm not sure -- I don't have any traffic stats logged specifically for non-logged-in users. My rough guess based on overall traffic stats though is that it'd contribute somethi...

Re: Updating website
How about updating the CAPTCHA process when registering the forums, as I suggested here ? I hope it will help prevent spam bots. Unfortunately that would be extremely non-trivial to implement, and I'm not convinced it would change spam levels significantly. Currently, the spam control on this forum...

Bounties
Back in the olden days of Life, there were a decent number of problems that had monetary bounties on them that were offered up by various members of the Life community (most famously by Conway himself, such as his $50 bounty for finding a pattern that exhibits infinite growth). I would like to see s...

Re: Updating website
Will the homepage be updated to closer resemble the new forums in design? No plans at the moment, but I can at it to the todo list. Current plans are focused on updating/improving the forums and wiki, but I can have a look at the main page after those upgrades are done. The largest collection of on...

Re: Updating website
Forum software is now updated. It seems to be functional again (but let me know if anything is not), but looks quite different. Will start transitioning things back to the old style (e.g., the ConwayLife.com header and LifeViewer integration) now.

Re: Updating website
On the topic of updating, could the mediawiki plugin or whatever it is that allows tables to have tabs be added? It'd be useful to have a way to control the third value in the 5S project summary table. Could you point me to a Wikipedia page (or a page on another wiki) that has the functionality you...

Yep, nothing will be lost. It's just the back-end software that is being updated -- all forum posts and wiki articles will carry on as if nothing happened.

Updating website
I'm starting to fiddle around with (finally!) updating a bunch of things on the backend of website. Unfortunately, my testing has revealed that there is pretty much no way to do this without temporarily breaking things -- updating the server from PHP 5.3 to PHP 7.2 breaks both the forums and the wik...

The 33-bit search took about 250 CPU days, which means we're looking at roughly 625 or so CPU days for a 34-bit search.googoIpIex wrote:How long did the search take?
