Re: Golly bugs

Web Golly 4.2 the Paste function seems to be ignoring Right-click to do the actual paste. I've uploaded a new build that should fix this (works on Safari and Chrome on my Mac). You should be able to right-click or ctrl-click on the paste image (or the selection). Zooming in/out using the mouse whee...

Re: Golly suggestions

This commit says it "updated patterns used by web version of Golly", but the collection on http://golly.sourceforge.net/webapp/golly.html hasn't been expanded. I've just uploaded a new version of webGolly that contains all your suggested pattern changes. You'll probably need to force the page to be...

Re: Golly bugs

Looks like you used an experimental build of web Golly 4.2 we're currently testing. Unfortunately it has a few bugs ... I think those bugs are now fixed so please try the latest build. You'll probably need to force the page to be reloaded, which might take a while, so be patient. Eventually you sho...

Re: Golly suggestions

The latest Golly 4.2 contains a few duplicated patterns in the Non-Totalistic folder: ... Thanks for spotting those. I assume the duplicates *outside* the Replicators/Spaceships subfolders are the files that should be deleted? This commit says it "updated patterns used by web version of Golly", but...

Re: DominoLife (CA on aperiodic domino tilings)

Because the Domino tiling is not periodic, tiles can have quite different neighborhoods: neighbors.png The yellow tile on the left has 9 neighbors (the maximum number) made up of 6 orange tiles that share an edge and 3 red tiles that only share a corner. The yellow tile on the right has only 5 neigh...

Re: DominoLife (CA on aperiodic domino tilings)

The pattern format used by DominoLife is text based, so sharing discoveries is easy. Select and copy the following to the clipboard, then choose "Open Clipboard" from DominoLife's File menu (or just type shift-O): DominoLife version=1 # This rule has only(?) two oscillators in the Domino tiling: # A...

DominoLife (CA on aperiodic domino tilings)

I've written a Lua script called DominoLife that lets you explore various CA rules on aperiodic domino tilings. The tilings are created using simple substitution rules, as in these two examples: https://tilings.math.uni-bielefeld.de/substitution/domino/ https://tilings.math.uni-bielefeld.de/substitu...

I discovered in 4.1 on macOS 11.6 that if a Python script calls a function in a separate script, Golly will not recompile the separate script if it is updated and the script which calls it is rerun.
See item #2 in Help > Python Scripting > Potential problems.

Re: Golly bugs

Is it down for improvement now? It gives a "301 Moved Permanently" message and points to this link , but when trying to access that site in Golly, an error pops up: " Unable to open requested HTML document: file://https/gliders/golly_index.html ". Works fine in Golly 4.2b1 (which now supports https...

Re: Golly suggestions

Also, when I click and initiate a paste event at the same time, Golly quits with a wxWidgets debug warning. I was able to reproduce this, but only on my Mac and only when typing cmd-V rather than just V. I'm pretty sure the warning is spurious (due to a bug somewhere in the wxMac code) but I've com...

Rotating/reflecting patterns you're pasting doesn't work. (Worked on 4.0.1, Mac OS 10.14.5)
Oops, my mistake. I'll make sure I fix this for the next release. Thanks for the report!

fix for links in Golly's Online Archives

Recent changes to conwaylife.com (and trevorrow.com) have broken the top 3 links in Help > Online Archives. The links redirect to https links which are not supported by the wxHTML class used by Golly. The long term solution is to switch to wxWebRequest which does support https, but until that happen...

Why did the dock icon for Golly 4.1 suddenly change from yellow to green?
Not sure. Maybe Big Sur automatically changes the icon color to help distinguish different versions of the same app.

Re: Golly archive question

http://golly.sourceforge.net/patterns/golly-access.html#computation implies there is a pattern file for O(sqrt(log(t))) but the link to get it does not work. Re: Golly suggestions

Right... But if the layer is clean, it's because a backup has just been saved, so having the option to cancel isn't so urgent in that case. (?) Maybe, but you might do a save, make further changes, then undo back to the save point. An accidental close at that point means you lose the chance to redo...

... Re: the Lua script above, I'm not quite clear on why it matters whether a layer gets marked clean or not.
If the layer is clean and you accidentally close Golly or hit the New Pattern button then you don't get a chance to cancel that operation.

Re: Golly suggestions

Suggestion: Make golly automatically save your pattern if you accidentally close it or it crashes (or when a power outage happens).
