Re: Thread for basic non-CGOL questions

No. Proof: 1. In order for a finite oscillator to exist, it needs to have a perimeter, e.g. a line so that all live cells in all generations lie within it. 2. How could such a perimeter look like, in particular, how does it behave in regards to edges? 90-degree edges are impossible because of the oc...

Are you using Ctrl-Shift-O? If yes, try pasting the pattern in. If not, try using Ctrl-Shift-O.

Re: Thread for Your Accidental Discoveries that Aren't in CGOL

That raises the more general question: What is the smallest rotor for a given period n in a 2d, 2-state, istotropic, Moore neighborhood? A lower bound is obvously log2 n, but is this bound always reachable? What about symmetrical rotors?

Re: Script request thread

I would like a script that makes a random nt rule without b2a. I tried this once but had lots of problems so I abandoned it. Could "random" be taken to mean equal likelihood of ON or OFF output, for each of the isotropic neighbor patterns, for birth and survival conditions? And do you need the rule...

Already searched quite a bit - features pi puffers that make searching difficult, but it does have interesting patterns, like a tiny c/14 diagonal.

Re: apgsearch - haul requests

B2-a3a/S1c23 has a huge variety of still lifes as well as oscillators. I only searched ~10000 sups, but got oscillators in all periods up to 20 except 13 and 19, and still lifes of all sizes between 6 and 100, among others. No spaceships so far. p17 (simplified from haul version): x = 8, y = 8, rule...

Tangent on Heisenburps If we're trying to get a count of all distinct 3-glider collisions, it's not sufficient to run the pattern and throw out cases where the added third glider is undamaged. There will be the occasional Heisenburp, like these four that showed up in 2003 from investigating just on...
