In particular, it works identically in b3s234a, a rule one transition away from Life. There is a sample soup for this oscillator in b3s234a/D8_1 (page), with the following attribute line:

First known odd-period oscillator in Holstein. The absence of still lifes in this rule makes it straightforward to find prime-period oscillators using rlifesrc.

The question is: would it be possible to use the computational power of Rule 110 and program something non-trivial into such oscillators, to produce unusual periods of something?

It's also worth a note that the sequence of all possible periods may not be trivially computable or it may even be undecidable! Unless there is a procedure that allows to produce a given period based on Rule 110 internal technology.
