Rules Supporting Unusual Spaceships

Post by confocaloid » January 19th, 2024, 8:14 pm

Rules supporting unusual spaceships

This thread is intended to be a collection point for cellular automaton rules that support unusual spaceships (henceforth abbreviated SUS rules). Currently there is no widely accepted unambiguous definition of 'unusual spaceship'. Nevertheless, several types of SUS rules are known.
I think "an oblique spaceship commonly occurring in a non-exploding rule" describes one interesting type of an unusual spaceship.
(See also Day and Knight rule group and other related forum threads linked at the end of this post.)

This rule seems pretty SUS:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 9, rule = B3-ckq4ceqtwy5aiqy6cen7e8/S2ace3-kq4nqwz5-ci6aei

Shown above is an oblique (8,6)c/71 spaceship, made out of the two most common gliders borrowed from tlife repeatedly colliding with each other.

Amazingly, another two-glider collision in the same rule is a gun made out of spaceships (GMOS):

Code: Select all

#C 8-barrelled p524 glider gun made out of two gliders repeatedly colliding with each other
x = 29, y = 33, rule = B3-ckq4ceqtwy5aiqy6cen7e8/S2ace3-kq4nqwz5-ci6aei

This gun shoots diagonal c/4 gliders. A gun for the c/5o is possible as well:

Code: Select all

#C p524 T gun

So, is the oblique (8,6)c/71 antelopeship actually made out of spaceships that can be shot from guns?
Let's call such a spaceship an AMOGuS (Antelopeship Made Out of Gunnable Spaceships).

Code: Select all

#C A gun that shoots three different types of spaceships:
#C the c/4d glider, a 2c/10o spaceship, and a (8,6)c/71 AMOGuS.

Are there other known AMOGuSes? Is there an INT rule with two different AMOGuSes?

Amusingly, the same rule also supports a period-27 oscillator that looks like a checkerboard in two different phases:

Code: Select all

Evolves into aesthetically pleasing oscillator in B3-ckq4ceqtwy5aiqy6cen7e8/S2ace3-kq4nqwz5-ci6aei:

Code: Select all

x = 154, y = 117, rule = B3-ckq4ceqtwy5aiqy6cen7e8/S2ace3-kq4nqwz5-ci6aei

Unfortunately I haven't found any more unusual spaceships (US) in that rule, among US and AMoGuS already in it.

EDIT: A c/24 diagonal spaceship appeared:

These two high-period spaceships look different, but their mechanisms are similar.
In both cases, there is a temporary pair of reactions that oscillate with high periods close to each other (so that the phase of the entire spaceship is reduced to a combination of phases of the two oscillating reactions).
Are there other known examples of this?

By watching evolution of that orthogonal 14c/85265 spaceship, one can see the following:
  • At T = 0, the spaceship looks as shown above.
  • At T = 9808, the spaceship temporarily settles into a long thin "ruler". Two opposite long edges of the "ruler" oscillate at high periods that are close to each other. The top edge oscillates with period 546. The bottom edge oscillates with period 550.
  • The two edges continue to oscillate almost independently from each other until T ~ 83300..83400, when the ends of the "ruler" break and the shape of the pattern changes.
  • From T = 84074, the pattern begins slowly shrinking, while the middle part oscillates with period 14.
  • At T = 85265, the initial phase of the spaceship reappears, translated 14 cells down.

  • At T = 0, the spaceship looks as shown above.
  • At T = 157, the spaceship temporarily settles into a pair of noninteracting oscillators, with high periods close to each other (p220 and p224).
  • At T = 4431, the p220 and the p224 collide with each other.
  • At T = 4586, the initial phase of the spaceship reappears, only mirror-reflected and translated.

Yes here is one 76c/39052o

Code: Select all

x = 44, y = 13, rule = B3aeijr4ej5r6ci7c8/S2-i3-ay4einrtyz5jnr6cn7
b2o$obo$3o7$40b3o$39bo2bo$39b2o2bo$42b2o!
Also for the 14c/85265o Here is what I understand about it
The bottom reaction repeats every 550, and every time the bottom is repeated the top goes forward 4 gens, This happens 133 times before breaking. Over time the top recedes from the center, and then it doubles back, going towards it, the pattern finally breaks when the top has reached the center, This also explains why the graph fluctuates the least in the center

I still need to understand the difference between the sides because sometimes sides seem to be the same reaction just at different generations

Compared to the other spaceships in this thread, this isn't very SUS, but it seemed SUS enough to me (7c/114):

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 4, rule = B3-k4-aqrty/S2-ae3acjkq4acirtyz5ijkq6-n8

[[ TRACK 7/114 0 GPS 30 ZOOM 16.8 ]]
The same rule also has a 3c/31 which pushes a beehive:

Code: Select all

This rule is kind of strange -- most soups stabilize very quickly, unless they have (or have parts that evolve to have) D2_+2 symmetry, in which they explode.
Can we make a (28,3)c/84 spaceship??

Not very SUS, but it is an interesting SMOS:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B2ek3einq4cn5c6ack/S02-en3knr4anrz5y6a
bo$obo$obo$2bo$2bo!
The reason why I deem it as interesting is because that the pattern-encoding part of its apgcode, 61u, contains the two digits that form the x and y components of its slope.

This R2 von Neumann rule has a c/7o ship that looks non-monotonic but is actually monotonic, as well as a c/4o that seems like it shouldn't exist:

That rulestring is incorrectly processed by LifeViewer (for reasons explained in the forum post viewtopic.php?p=192570#p192570). The actual CA defined by the rulestring doesn't support your knightship.

Again, please do not use that rulestring in posts until the bug is fixed, because any such patterns will break in future.

Here is the same pattern with a different rulestring, which should work correctly in LifeViewer in future when the bug is fixed:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 7, rule = R2,C0,S1,6-7,B,N@54422a|R2,C0,S1-8,B1,4-7,N@54422a

Not itself an interesting ship per se, but a lot of interesting dynamics surrounding collisions of a particular (4,3)c/11 engine.

(There's might be some repost here from a while ago)

For example this collision-based log growth (best run in golly hashlife):

I managed to find a synthesis of the glider from colliding bugs (see the guns above).
However, I could not find a synthesis of any bug from colliding gliders; this remains an open problem.

The weighted neighbourhood (shown below) is defined to distinguish between range-1 neighbours (each weighted 113 decimal = 71 hexadecimal) and all other neighbours (each weighted 1). Both the unmodified Conway's Life, and the unmodified Bosco, can be defined with the same weighted neighbourhood.

Not itself an interesting ship per se, but a lot of interesting dynamics surrounding collisions of a particular (4,3)c/11 engine.

I rulegolfed for a while and found more interesting things.

A rake that periodically produces a c/2 collision based sqrt-diameter growth thingy:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 20, rule = B2e3acij4ajqry5k6e78/S1c2-in3nr4anw5ajny6i78

Breeder with nice-looking pattern:

Sparse high-period p5062 gun based on production of a far-apart pair of the oblique ship:

Collision-based linear replication:

what does the SASL mean
likes interesting rules
vist my rules here
also, if you have fractal-related discoveries
also likes weird growth patterns in CA
