The oscillators have a period of 64, while the spaceships have a velocity of 2c/5, and the period of the adjustable ships is based on the LCM of those periods. Each oscillator's phase is shifted 10 generations back after it is hit by the spaceship, while each spaceship's phase is shifted 2 generations ahead after the spaceship hits both oscillators. This means that a adjustable spaceship made of these reactions must have a period of 64n-10=5m+2, where n and m are integers.

For the 2d adjustable spaceship, each oscillator's phase is shifted 20 generations back after it is hit by two spaceships.
Each spaceship's phase is still shifted 2 generations ahead, after the spaceship hits two oscillators. This means that a 2d adjustable spaceship made of these reactions must have a period of 64n-20=5m+2, where n and m are integers.

Assuming that the displacements work, finding a period that satisfies those equations can be used to figure out about how far apart the oscillators need to be to get a functioning spaceship. Afterwards, I adjusted the position of the components until they successfully returned to their original position (relative to the overall velocity).

My process was something like this:
1. Start with the 4c/182:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 53, rule = B35e/S2-i36cHistory

$3A5.3A4$A.A5.A.A$.A7.A2$.A7.A$A.A5.A.A4$3A5.3A$.A7.A!
2. Add some ships which shift it sideways using one of the two spaceship-oscillator collisions:

Code: Select all

x = 74, y = 54, rule = B35e/S2-i36cHistory
60.3A5.3A2$59.A3.A3.A3.A$59.A3.A3.A3.A$59.2A.2A3.2A.2A$61.A7.A2$61.A7.

3. Add a temporary pair of ships offset by about ~1/2 of the period (512 generations in this case):

Code: Select all

4. Add a third oscillators which forms the other collision with a temporary spaceship:

8. The tricky bit: Shift the "back" of the ship backwards, while preserving
the postition of the red ships and their phase relative to the oscillators,
until the ships return just in time to collide in the right way. This can be
done by running the simulation 5n generations (in this case 140, based what looked right):

In this case, step 8 needs to be repeated for another 5 generations to get the working spaceship:

Suggests this reflector may still work as a dependent glider reflector (maybe periodic if the large spark could trigger a glider release)

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

So strange to be in a rule with adjustable slopes but no known formula.
