Here is another way for a loop of perimeter 22 to make a loop of perimeter 132 that is able to replicate forever.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 6, rule = shapeloop-a
GDCBCDBF$.B2HJHJA$.CHI3HA$.D2HBC2D$.B2HD$.CDBC!
Here is a pattern which can withstand any loop, shown below stopping the arm of another loop.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 21, rule = shapeloop-a

The reason why it can withstand a loop is because it's surrounded by state 8 cells. Loop arms won't attempt to destroy state 8 cells. Also, it's a lot better to use shapeloop instead of shapeloop-a so no one has to search for the rule variant.

Here is another way to generate hybrid loops. The two ways I mentioned in this thread are the only ones I know of. Both are natural. (One can only see the hybrid loop if one deletes both of bprentice's loops after they make the rectangle.)

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 24, rule = shapeloop-a
DC3DA2D$C6HE$BH4.HD$DH4.HA$D4H.HD$C2D2A2HA$4.A2HD$4.DADA9$27.DADA$27.
A2HD$27.D2H3A2D$27.AH.4HC$27.DH4.HD$27.EH4.HD$27.D6HB$27.DA3DCDC!
This type of reaction seems to make very complex loops (if it is successful). Perhaps one could make a loop that died unless it interacted in this way with another loop.

Unfortunately, neither of the "junctures" that were claimed to mix feeds together actually do so! The juncture required to complete the "gear box" would emit a signal if there was a signal in either of the two feeds. Neither of the junctures do so, as shown below.

Code: Select all

x = 63, y = 27, rule = shapeloop-b

Unfortunately, reactions that are successful, use the second hybrid loop-producing mechanism I mentioned, and make simpler loops than the loops in those reactions are very common. One of them is shown below. In this case, the loop is so simple that it destroys its parents.

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 33, rule = shapeloop-ltd
12.G$DF3A3.5A$D3HA3.A3HA$C2HJ5AH.HD$B2DJ.5J.HC$2.BH7.HB$2.CH7.HD$2.DH
7.HD$3AH7.HB$A2HJ5H2.HC$AH.H5AH.HD$D3HA3.A3HD$5A3.4AF8$32.F4A3.5A$32.
D3HA3.A3HD$32.DH.H5AH.HA$32.CH2.5HJ2HA$32.BH7.H3A$32.DH7.HD$32.DH7.HC
$32.BH7.HB$32.CH.5J.J2DB$32.DH.H5AJ2HC$32.A3HA3.A3HD$32.5A3.3AFD$32.G
!
A similar reaction (shown below) makes very strange loops. I don't know how to classify the pseudo-spaceships emitted from the pattern.

Code: Select all

x = 50, y = 37, rule = shapeloop-ltd
12.G$DF3A3.5A$D3HA3.A3HA$C2HJ5AH.HD$B2DJ.5J.HC$2.BH7.HB$2.CH7.HD$2.DH
7.HD$3AH7.HB$A2HJ5H2.HC$AH.H5AH.HD$D3HA3.A3HD$5A3.4AF12$37.F4A3.5A$
37.D3HA3.A3HD$37.DH.H5AH.HA$37.CH2.5HJ2HA$37.BH7.H3A$37.DH7.HD$37.DH
7.HC$37.BH7.HB$37.CH.5J.J2DB$37.DH.H5AJ2HC$37.A3HA3.A3HD$37.5A3.3AFD$
37.G!

Here is a successful reaction using the second type of hybrid loop-producing mechanism with two different loops.

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 37, rule = shapeloop-ltd
