As I mentioned in the Unrecognized CA thread, here's the soup that makes a p3 c/3 ship in B34/S26.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B34/S26

I noticed an interesting effect in the b36/s125 (2x2) soups in the catagolue.
Longer versions of this wick:

Code: Select all

#C [[ VIEWONLY ZOOM 16 ]]
x = 16, y = 7, rule = B36/S125
o3bo4bo$bo3bo4bo$6bo4bo$7bo4bo$13bo$14bo$15bo!
appear significantly less often than shorter versions, and are in fact the rarest still life WITH their number of cells -- at least until you reach about length 9 when the probability of the wick being created by a wickstretcher starts exceeding the probability of it occurring spontaniously. Then the probability of an n-length wick only slightly exceeds the probability of an n-1 length wick; in fact, the maximum length occurring in the Catagolue is 23 (!) and is probably the most common 2x2 still life that has 23 cells.
I hypothesized this effect would eventually happen in Life -- after natural boat/tubstretchers started occurring -- but it's happening in 2x2 now because that rule has a relatively common natural wickstretcher.

After some concerted CPU effort, a puffer has emerged from a soup in B36/S245. It moves at 28c/1200 and is very similar to the replicator - it comprises two interacting shuttles but they are offset in space and time. It is detected as yl1200_1_16_e49e8812cafb8e3c299f15f4178845dc by apgsearch.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B36/S245
bo3b3o3b5o$3bobo2b2o4bo$b3ob2o2bo5bo$obobob5o4bo$2o2bo2b4o3b2o$3bob2ob

2o$2o2bo5b5o$o3b3ob3o3b2o$5bob3obo$ob2obo2b2o3bobo$b2ob5o2bo!
#C [[ THUMBNAIL ZOOM 4 ]]
Alas, no replicator yet, though one advantage of searching this rule is that the search runs considerably faster because it dies out often and stabilises very quickly.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

I was looking through B38S23/d8_4 soups and found this infinite growth:

Code: Select all

I guess I wouldn't be the "discoverer" because the hauls weren't uploaded by me, but is this the first infinite growth in B38S23 that doesn't work in Life?

It's not clear who should get the credit for these discoveries. It's either Josh Ball (who initiated the search), apgsearch (which identified it as zz_LINEAR), or you (the first human to actually notice what had happened). This is not unlike the discovery that 2^42643801 - 1 is prime, which was performed by a machine on 2009-04-12 but only noticed by a human a couple of months later (2009-06-04).

This invokes the question as to whether there are more unusual occurrences noticed by apgsearch and lying in the uncharted depths of Catagolue?
but is this the first infinite growth in B38S23 that doesn't work in Life?
Maybe. Can one engineer a 31c/589 spaceship from this puffer?

It's hard to say who noticed it first. I saw the zz_LINEAR pattern come up and I ran it, but I wasn't sure if this was a known pattern or not. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of what's known in different rules.

Nice one. I love the unusual kaleidoscope effect in the center, from the eight internal glider streams. It's too bad it falls prey to a glider-block cycle at a mere 197267 ticks.

A p23 oscillator in B3/S238. I guess it's too common to have any sample soups listed?

Code: Select all

I tried in life. The result was the rule changed inadvertently.

Seeds is an "exploding" rule, which gives messes like that. I think every B2 rule is like that. Generally, the interesting rules have B3 and any combination of B5, B6, B7, and B8. B4 usually explodes or becomes uninteresting; the only interesting rule with B4 I know if is B34/S26 (and its close relatives).

Nonetheless I (almost) knew that, but had every pattern to be really such unstable, other than the photon, moon and photon-siamese-moon?

I just saw the glider gun yesterday, but I didn't know that it was discovered before apgsearch too. In my opinion it is even more interesting than the puffer.

Just like another rule I tried to search once (don't remember the rule number), B3/S02456 has the weird property that while most patterns tend to stabilize, D2_+2 symmetry patterns usually explode in a line, occasionally shooting spaceships out of the ends. However, b3/s02456 also shoots out puffers so that probably isn't the rule I was thinking of.

Example asymmetric soup that becomes symmetrical and explodes (there are two of them in the catagolue):

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S02456

p412 oscillator in B358/S23 is not uncommon.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B358/S23

However, b3/s02456 also shoots out puffers so that probably isn't the rule I was thinking of.

Example asymmetric soup that becomes symmetrical and explodes (there are two of them in the catagolue):

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S02456

The soup in Catagolue marked "explosive" actually stabilizes in around 1 million gens. I haven't checked the other one yet.

Some interesting results, including three instances of a period-126 rectangle oscillator, appeared in b36s125/D4_+4:

Scroll down to near the bottom of the page to see the p126 oscillator. You'll struggle to miss it...

In B36/S245 two instances of a shuttle based replicator have appeared in 8x32 asymmetrical soups - however they are both variants of the well known replicator with an offset between the two shuttles of (15,2) in place of (13,0):

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 16, rule = B36/S245

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb!
#C [[ STEP 4 ZOOM 2 ]]
and (14,-1) with phase difference of 4:

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 16, rule = B36/S245
bobobobboobobobooobbbobbobbobbob$
bobboboboobooobbooobooooobbobboo$

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb!
#C [[ STEP 4 ZOOM 2 ]]
These two instances have both shown up after less than 26 million soups, whereas just over 130 million 16x16 soups have been submitted to Catagolue. This is perhaps not that suprising as soups die out relatively quickly in this rule and the side length of 32 gives greater opportunity for side by side shuttles to form.

For some reason I haven't determined yet, Catogolue reports 4 instances of the replicator from these two soups.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

Because apgsearch gets confused about how many replicators there are in a particular soup (after all, they multiply!).

This B3/S258 soup produces an oscillator that resembles the fox:
