I'm thinking of a Life-esque (that is, not exploding) 2-state CA where a pattern arranges itself into 'clouds' - perhaps 'islands' would be a better name, actually, since I'm thinking of them being completely solid and filled in the center - which are stable in the middle with oscillating/frothing edges that perhaps spit out junk, gliders, etc. All my attempts so far at making a rule like this have failed, though...
Anyone have an idea as to how this rule could work? Is it even possible to do so, or would the transitions needed to make the clouds work be too complicated for a ruletable? S8 would obviously be necessary, and maybe S3 and S5 when the surrounding cells are all adjacent on one side of the transitioning cell.

Day and Night seems to fit your description, with big soup sizes.

If B0 rules aren't "cheating", you might like this rule, found by David Eppstein:
In the above example, the natural gun shows up by generartion 9,000.
Code: Select all
x = 555, y = 283, rule = B013468/S02
