The rule is backwards-compatible with doublelog, but it should be fairly easy to get rid of state 6.

Nice! Seems so obvious in retrospect. Now, it seems like that the first significant roadbump appears with inverse Ackermann. How can we do that?

The tricky part here is that this function is not primitive recursive — you cannot encode it in terms of do and while loops alone. You'd have to use a device that can compute arbitrary hyperoperators.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-q4z5y/S234k5j

Um, Wikipedia says that Ackermann is not primitive recursive but inverse Ackermann is. In any case, if I have while loops, I could probably implement something involving pointers and stacks to compute Ackermann. If Wikipedia is right:

Code: Select all

var ackermann=function(x){
  var i=0;
  while(inverseackermann(i)<x){
    i+=1;
  }
  return i;
};

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackermann ... y_function says that if you have a stack you can compute A(m,n) as:

Code: Select all

PUSH <m,n>
WHILE stackLength <> 1
{
   POP 2 elements;
   PUSH 1 or 2 or 3 elements, applying the rules r1, r2, r3
}
where the rules are

Code: Select all

(r1) 0, n -> n + 1
(r2) (m+1), 0 -> m, 1
(r3) (m+1), (n+1) -> m, m+1, n
\sum_{n=1}^\infty H_n/n^2 = \zeta(3)

I call this WeirdLife. Here's why:
  • The tub creates a traffic light.
  • Honey farms can only form by chance: their predecessors form traffic lights instead.
  • Queen bees are c/2 spaceships.
  • B-heptaplets are, similarly, glide-symmetric 2c/4 spaceships.
  • And if that wasn't enough, the C-heptomino is an RRO! :D (Unfortunately, the multiplicity is 1. :()

Code: Select all

I found this naturally in a HighLife soup:

Code: Select all

 x = 6, y = 2, rule = B36/S23History

It's SO close to volatility 1. (The one cell that stays alive has a greenish tint.)

Has anybody seen this 34-Life reaction?

This is StillLife.
As its name suggests, it has a lot of still lifes.
I made something similar to D̶e̶a̶n̶ ̶H̶i̶c̶k̶e̶r̶s̶o̶n̶'̶s̶ ̶C̶y̶c̶l̶o̶t̶r̶o̶n̶.̶ (Edit: The Exploratorium.)

How much of current CA technology can I redevelop "on a desert island"?
