The other end of that block chain can be shifted outward as well, which might facilitate faster building:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 19, rule = B2ce3ai_S23

EDIT: Also, the duplicator SL isn't hard to build, so a Geminoid-type spaceship using mechanisms such as the failed stable inserter from earlier might be feasible:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 12, rule = B2ce3ai_S23
2b2o$2bo2bo$4b2o2$2o$2bo$2o3$7bo$6bobo$6bobo!

Can the plumes be perturbed by catalysts north of the input lane to make an edge-reflector?

Here's a 180 degree edge reflector based on that:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 12, rule = B2ce3ai_S23
7b2o$2o5bo$o3b2obo$2bo2bob2o2b2o$b2o2bo6bo$4b2o3b2o$9b2o2b2o$13b2o2$
10b2o$12bo$10b2o!
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible to hook the output into another stable reflector other than itself. There's also not really a repeat time since the output lane overlaps the input lane.

In other news, I found a signal elbow which allows for closed signal loops! It's got a repeat time of 12. Here's a demonstration:

Code: Select all

x = 50, y = 49, rule = B2ce3ai_S23

Now I'm going to be looking into the possibility of turning signals into something more easily manipulated such as 'gliders'.

EDIT: Well, turns out there was a simpler elbow I managed to overlook all along, with a repeat time of 6:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 25, rule = B2ce3ai_S23

The first one may still be useful though, as its output is delayed by 6 gens relative to the simple elbow. The simple elbow when chained produces a signal of speed 3c/4, but that's not very efficient since transfer speeds asymptotically approaching c can be achieved.

Nice find. This rule really seems like Life on easy mode.

If you can split a signal and find a fast signal-to-glider conversion, you'd have true period glider guns at every period except a few in the first 20 or so. As far as I know, we have glider guns at 12, 26, 52, 60, 61 and 67 and above.

Huh, hives are pretty useful... It's pretty easy to convert a glider into one or two hives, move the hive around, and then spit a glider out at the end...

The above has a couple new beehive conduits in it.

This rule seems to be begging for a history rule, but "B2ce3ai_S23_History" doesn't really sound good. I've already made a rule for it, I just am wondering whether we should figure out a generic name for the rule or not, and if so, what. (I'm not suggesting to change the bare rule's ruletable name itself)

I recently made a script to generate arbitrary [R]History rules, where [R] is any (not necessarily isotropic) 2-state Moore-neighborhood rule, by dirtily modifying my own apgsearch v0.Ni code. I've been reluctant to post it, because the interface is bad, the code is not clearly commented, and it hasn't been tested enough; it also simplistically just capitalizes the first letter of the rulename and appends "History", so it misgenerates some existing [R]History names, like "TLifeHistory", for example. I will, however, post it soon if anyone wants to use it (probably with some added features such as custom rulenames).

Found another microreflector:

Unfortunately, it's hard to build, has repeat time 53, and produces gliders of the same parity as the blockic reflector, which means it doesn't fix my salvo-builder.
However, it's a better inserter, especially for the "put a glider behind" case.

Right now the known conduits are a few glider reflectors/duplicators, converters between hives and gliders (both ways) and (treating hives as the equivalent of Herschels) the following conduits: F41 and T36 (T for turn, since the main object used is symmetric. I still use forward because generally the conduits cant take in an output from the 'wrong' side). F41 and T36 both have many forms due to needing something to suppress a side reaction at the entry (which can be accomplished many ways) but there's no general form that has asserted itself as the most convenient yet.
...I don't know if that information above need to be posted. The main point of this post is to show off some extra additions to the conduits list, starting with the giant F124:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 27, rule = B2ce3ai_S23

6bo2bo$7bobo7bo$7bobo6b2o$8bo!
There's also a splitter conduit (T123/T104). I've found only one conduit that can take the gen 104 output, and it has the unfortunate problem that I've only been able to connect it to another conduit (it's an F56, not sure what to count its inputs as though) which I've only been able to connect to itself. I attached those conduits as well as a T36 to the gen 123 output to demonstrate its splitting ability:

I'm sure this can be resolved, but even if it can't the gen 123 output is still usable.
EDIT: Here's an F49, a B160 that currently can only feed into the F49, and a hive->glider that I'm posting just because it looks rather odd:

Note that I generally don't count hives as actually having become an output yet if they are going to interact with the already-existing catalysts in the next generation.

FINAL EDIT: I found a 90 degree edge reflector with repeat time of 50 ticks. It can also be upgraded to a duplicator, which increases repeat time to 76 ticks. Though it's not exactly a highway robber yet, it's much better than the previous 180 degree reflector:

Code: Select all

Here's a F42, a related splitter F42/F42b, and T36 joined to that splitter:

Code: Select all

x = 124, y = 35, rule = B2ce3ai_S23
3$115b2o$115b2o2b2o$63b2o54b2o$63b2o2b2o$67b2o42b2o$111b2o$15b2o42b2o

2o$114bo6b2o$113bobo$113bobo$114bo5b2o$120b2o!
When joined to T36 (the only one I know that works together with it), the left side of the splitter can use any of T36, F41, F42, as long as the right side is F42b. It has a repeat time of 58. This enables true period glider guns for all periods 58 and above.

So true period guns are currently known for periods 12, 22, 26, 44, 52, and 58 and above (examples given for 58-61):

I can't load this rule in the golly app, and the forum viewer does not let me play it. Help?

http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic. ... 382#p27382

- Copy the first code block, paste it into a text editor and save as a new file "B2ce3ai_S23.rule" in the Rules folder for Golly.

- In Golly, Control -> Set Rule... , then type "B2ce3ai_S23" in the box labeled "Enter a new rule:". If you want, type "B2ce3ai_S23" in the second box and click "Add" so you never have to type "B2ce3ai_S23" again. Then click OK.

- Now you can load any pattern here in the same way as you would load any Life pattern.

nvm, got it working.

And then there's also this reaction:
