I have been trying to figure out this for a while but why are almost all B34 rules explosive?
Mainly it's rules in the B34/S23 and B34/S34 rulespace that explode. Rules such as B34/S15 do not explode.
It's OK to abbreviate my username to "P1GG," but never, never, call me "pig."

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

Because those birth transitions are exceptionally powerful. B3 allows outward expansion, and B4 additionally makes it even easier for cells to be born around the edges of a finite pattern.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-q4z5y/S234k5j

Thanks! A summary of the transitions that make B34 rules explosive:
B4a, B4w and B4n makes it even easier for cells to be born around the edges of a finite pattern.
B4k promotes chaotic growth
B4y, B4z, B4r and B4q allows long-lasting regions of chaotic activity (In order of effect strength)

Under what seems to be the standard-definition of turing-completeness here, Langton's ant is turing complete.

This is my first post here. Thank you very much (to the moderators) for allowing me to join.

My question: Is there a rule (can be outer-totalistic, isotropic, or LtL (Larger-than-Life)) that you have encountered with as many 4-cell stable objects (still-lifes or oscillators) as possible? Let's start from 39.

Welcome to the forums!
There are range-1 isotropic rules known to have a family of 3-cell oscillators or 3-cell spaceships, adjustable ad infinitum.

A very simple rule with just two isotropic transitions have another infinite class of 4-cell oscillators based on bounded XOR replicators:

Code: Select all

x = 51, y = 14, rule = B2a/S0
obo$2bo2bo2$o2bo$3bo4bo2$o4bo$5bo8bo2$o8bo$9bo16bo2$o16bo$17bo32bo!
If you have an explicit example rule that backs up the number 39, you may just as well post it directly — no need to ask this kind of question beforehand :)
EDIT: or did you get it from this post, which suggests that there are this many patterns with MCPS = 4?

Thank you for your kind reply. I am still learning how to post my questions.

Your solution is very interesting and simple. I have not thought of this method before.

The rule I was referring to is my own. Here is the rule with the 39 4-cell still-lifes and oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 191, y = 25, rule = R3,C2,S2,B3,N+
b2o11b2o13b2o12bobo15bobo15b2o15b2o8bobo9b2o12b2o8bobo11b2o13bobo13bo
2bo$o2bo9bo3bo9bo4bo9bo3bo13bobo14b2o16bobo7bo2bo7bo2bo11b2o8b2o13b2o
13bobo13bo2bo9$b2o11b2o13b2o12bobo15bobo15b2o15b2o8bobo9b2o12b2o8bobo
26bobo13bo2bo2$o2bo9bo3bo9bo4bo9bo3bo13bobo14b2o16bobo7bo2bo7bo2bo11b
2o8b2o28bobo13bo2bo9$b2o11b2o13b2o12bobo15bobo15b2o15b2o8bobo9b2o12b2o
8bobo42bo2bo3$o2bo9bo3bo9bo4bo9bo3bo13bobo14b2o16bobo7bo2bo7bo2bo11b2o
8b2o44bo2bo!
The range-4 version has 114, and in general the range-n version has at least n(2n^3+3n^2-2n+3)/6.
