Padding -- you mean padding the bitstring with zeroes in step 4? That's just to ensure it's the right length for easy, unambiguous conversion to octal digits.
The problem as I view it is that different B/S principal number have a different number of sub-neighborhoods, asking each neighborhood to be expanded differently.
There's not much that can be done about the different numbers of subconditions that the various B/S conditions have, unfortunately. B7 (or S7) only has two, while B4 (or S4) has 13, that's just the way it is in Alan's scheme. And of course he didn't pull his scheme from thin air either: these really are the numbers of different configurations that can exist for a given neighbor count.

That said, with these "Apple Bottom numbers", the non-integer part that encodes the non-totalistic subconditions is largely opaque. It's still true that tools working with these numbers need to know about the different numbers of subconditions that exist for different B/S conditions, but:
  • Using 14 bits for each individial B/S condition would make the resulting numbers quite a bit longer (as strings);
  • I've already implemented it this way, and I'm lazy and don't want to change things; and
  • Perfect is the enemy of good.
(Re: the last bullet point, calling these a "standard" is hubris, of course, but that's a great virtue. In fact, with the second bullet points I've also covered laziness as well!)
It would also be great if the scheme allow a easy transfer towards non-istropic non-totalistic rules (aka the most general form of 2d Moore rules, which would obviously be sufficiently described with a 2^9=512 bit string ).
For those I'd say it'd be most natural to use a 128-digit hexadecimal number that encodes said 512 bits. (In fact I don't think there's ANY notation for these rules yet, certainly nothing generally understood and agreed on.)

I'm not sure how you'd extend either rule integers or "Apple Bottom numbers" to cover these non-isotropic rules.

To be clear, when someone actually implement a nt-rule, it comes done to convert the rule into a 1/0 string, corresponding to each distinguishable configuartions. And in the same time, construct a convolution matrix capable of distinguishing such configs. To this end, I would tend to collect all possible nt-configs into my rule string, consisting of (1+2+6+10+13+10+6+2+1)*2=102 digits. This allow a immediate un-ambiguous conversion into a rule table.

There is obvious downside to this scheme:
  • It is largely a black-box, worse than AB number
    It will be long, and int102 exceeds the common double precision

The only pro is the rulestring has a fixed length and this might allow easier implementation for rookie like me. (lol)

The most challenge part of this scheme, however, is to identify a convolution filter capable of projecting a given config to the 2^101 possible Alan Hensel subconditions. The central cell obvious can take the value of 2^100, but we then need to allocate the 2^100 into the rest of 8 neighbors in a symmetric way, and I don't know how to accomplish that yet. EDIT: It might even be impossible to construct a symmetric convolution filter that will do the job.

Having said all that, that scheme is not terribly different from AB number, and I agree that AB number is more informative and more concise in any regard. There is yet another issue regarding the filenam: '.' should be reserved for file extension, I would suggest ',' as a better separator.

Ah, I do apologize, most of what follows went right over my head! Same as for your posts in the "Smoothiness" thread -- they're fascinating, but I don't understand them. :)

By all means do come up with and use whatever numbering scheme works best for your purpose, too.

Either works really. The separator is really just the decimal separator; writing "B2ce3ai/S23. has AB number 6156.177174" is really no different in principle from saying "2/5 is equal to 0.4". When working with files, you could use any separator really; the number itself is just a rational, and how you write it down, what symbols you use etc. doesn't change the number.

You were right, it is quite slow, but not so slow as to be unsearchable: I'm getting roughly one soup per second.

This has some very problematic (as far as soup searching goes) patterns, too. So far Golly hasn't choked on it, but there's definitely a lot of memory pressure:

Sorry I forgot to edit my previous post: some of these rules do give explosive soup! Especially along the line of symmetry.
