I'm wayyy too late to announce this 376.99850861.

Lifespan 18104, final pop 81902172, initial pop 12.

Code: Select all

x = 48, y = 3, rule = B2-ae3-ik4ai5a6ai78/S2a3-j4a5aijn6-ik78

No one cares about it when we already have patterns that exhibits millons of FIG...

bump
idea: engineer a rule which has really really powerful figseeds (say, FIG index of > 10^9)

perhaps it would have some sort of natural counting mechanism or something of that naturally appears from, say,

Code: Select all

obo
or something small like that, and then when the counting mechanism stopped, it would halt some huge quadratic growth.
might be feasible in maybe 3-4 states, (sorry, not INT :( ) but idk.

Anyways perhaps we should have a "CA Growth Challenge" which is just the general version of this thread. Or we could just use this thread for that.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'd imagine that "CA Growth Challenge" would have much higher FIG indices, by way of implementing googological functions-- say, a small configuration which
1) emits a c/2 spaceship;
2) attempts to compute SCG(13), say;
3) emits a lightspeed spaceship to chase down the c/2 ship, which creates a still life incredibly far away;
4) immediately after emitting the lightspeed spaceship, becomes a spacefiller travelling at, say, c/2;
5) stops filling space when it hits the still life.
This would essentially give a FIG index of around (in the googological sense ofc) SCG(13) (or whatever googological number was chosen)

Sorry, double post :oops:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
obo!
Just found this crazy rule ^
Two cells expand a good bit

Three cells are also good

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 12, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
bo11$obo!

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 10, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
bo9$obo!

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
bo4$obo!
Is this a record for two-cell figseeds?

FYI there's also this object which looks like it's infinite growth but idk

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
2bo2$obo!
If it isn't it's prolly a 3-cell record given the !!sudden quadratic growth!! 200K gens in

Here's a similar pattern

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
3bo3$obo!
This rule prolly has wonderful figseeds

EDIT:
Four cells, 2464325 cell monolith in 4726 gens

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 4, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
4bo2$10bo$obo!
This one goes to like 150 million in 60K gens:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 11, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
o8$9bo2$7bobo!
We should enumerate 4-cell seeds in a 20x20 box in this rule.

EDIT: :o 1.5 BILLION in around 100K gens

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 1, rule = B2-a3-i4-ek5-ae6cek78/S012-e3-ikn4-e5-anr6akn78
obobobo!
Not very good F/IG (only in the 1000s) but it is impressively large

I wonder if this rule(space) houses a record-holder.

Also, I propose a new metric for measuring figseeds. I call it maxpig, which stands for maximum population per initial population per generation. It is equal to the maximum value of the discrete function f(t) = (current population)/(initial population * t) It is similar to FIG, but is imo superior because it doesn't penalize you for growing slower than (initial population) cells per generation after quadratic growth and before stabilizing (patterns with, say, internal spaceships that trek across thousands of cells after the bounding box stops growing are heavily penalized by FIG but not by MAXPIG).

This above conversation is an example of the "sandboxification" we are trying to avoid. A simple wickstretcher like that would probably not be the most notable thing in any rule, but this thread is not for discussing rules but patterns with a specific property.

Back on topic, a trivial population improvement to the record holder (on the bottom of the previous page) cuts off 3 cells and boosts its FIG score to 355 million:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 9, rule = B2c3-i4567/S3-r4-t5-enq6-an78
2ob6o$ob2ob4o$b2o2bo$b3o4bo$o2bobo$b5ob2o$3bo2b3o$2o2bo$2b3obobo!

Exploring the rulespace I call "ultradrifty" (it highly resembles Cannibalism also). Although it have inherent advantage (Density is only 27% instead of 100%), I managed to get to FIG 20 with two cells (let's temporarily ignore the fact that I'm almost out of rulegolfing skills).

earlier this morning I tried to beat your record. Then in the afternoon without trying I got this gem of serendipity.

FIG of 6414116/(2*6787) = 472, FI of 3207058 (yes, three MILLION, though it still gets destroyed by the long-lasting ones) the rulespace may have a 2-cell record

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-ak3acy4aer5aiqy6acn7e/S01c2-kn3kn4at5-ekry6ain78
obo!
this was promising but didn't stabilize; would have easily been a fig of over 1000

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-ak3acy4aer5aiqy6-ek7e/S01c2-kn3kn4at5-ekry6ain78
obo!

aand here's one with a FIG of 28018500/(2*16114) = 869.383765669604070994 where the added transition is none other than s4k, never mind about it being bad

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-ak3acy4aer5aiqy6acn7e/S01c2-kn3kn4akt5-ekry6ain78
obo!
if this one stabilizes, the record is even higher

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-ak3acy4aer5aiqy6-ek7e/S01c2-kn3kn4akt5-ekry6ain78
obo!
it helps that basically the entire rulespace is full of these, so there's plenty of room for tweaking it

B2-ak3acy4aer5ainqy6-k7e/S01c2-kn3kn4akt5-ekry6ain78 is promising; it hasn't stabilized after nearly 100k generations and has a population of over 2 billion; the growth heads have fluctuated several times

EDIT: using hashlife I've gotten farther, another fluctuation and past 4 billion cells
past 10b now

I have no idea whether this will ever stabilize though its fluctuations are promising, but given that where it currently is at, it has a "partial"/"unstabilized" fig index of over 27045, it's either going to not stabilize or completely smash the two-cell record

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-ak3acy4aer5ainqy6-k7e/S01c2-kn3kn4akt5-ekry6ain78
obo!
ok after 300k generations and over 30b cells it seems like it's not stabilizing

ok found a new record in the two cell category, with a total of 752548712/(2*67143) = 5604.1

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 1, rule = B2-ak3acy4aerz5aiqy6-ik7e/S01c2-kn3kny4at5-ekry6ain78
obo!
some ships in the above rule at c/3

Code: Select all

x = 230, y = 74, rule = B2-ak3acy4aerz5aiqy6-ik7e/S01c2-kn3kny4at5-ekry6ain78

I think this stabilises at around population 3.9642324e11. I didn't catch the generation though.
