Although it can currently fit in a 150x250 box, it probably could be shrunk (shrunken?) down more.

Description of this pattern: Two extending wickstretchers send spaceships off to both sides. One side is eaten (but it doesn't have to be, it works just as well without the extra spaceships, except that it generates unnecessary spaceships), and the other side moves to the right. At the other end, another, fatter wickstretcher periodically generates two spaceships (which again, are eaten) and two more wickstretchers identical to the first two. If one of these new wickstretchers encounters a fat spaceship, it stops and converts the fat spaceship to a much thinner one and also sends a third kind of spaceship off to the side, which will eventually run into one or another of the wickstretchers without exploding into chaos. If a wickstretcher encounters a thin kind of spaceship, it continues, and the spaceship which would have normally been produced to the left would be hit by the thin spaceship and be destroyed (but the thin spaceship would get destroyed as well), and the spaceship that is produced to the right falls into exactly the same spot as it had been before.

A single block in this rule is even more interesting, because it appears to create a normal ruler sequence for a while, but at generation 2^19 wickstretchers extend out and form a square. As it turns out, squares form at generations 8*4, 8*(4 + 2^4), 8*(4 + 2^4 + 2^2^4), 8*(4 + 2^4 + 2^2^4 + 2^2^2^4)..., the 4th term of which has over 19000 digits.

No, it's linear.
I understand why, in the sawmill the rakes last forever while here the wick-stretcher created at time x lasts only until time 2x, therefore the amount of active wick-stretcher does not diverge.

Very good article!
However I don't understand why the CGOL ruler generator works, if no gliders are in the loop none ever get in and if one is introduced a growing Cantor Set results until it fills up the loop and gets complicated, also it is not hard to see that the c/12 puffer would not be destroyed unless the rake is removed.
But why does it create the ruler sequence, do you have any article that explains that?
