B37/S23 is usually known as DryLife due to the absence of fish (*WSSes).

I think that the smallest pattern proved to be a breeder (pattern with population growth bounded below by kt²) in this rule is the gun that shoots 9c/28 rakes, unless you have a rigorous proof for your pattern?

Similarly, I believe that the smallest candidate for a breeder is the 6-cell stairstep hexomino:

Anyway, this rule is definitely Type-III to the point where it's utterly incompatible with apgsearch. Even HighLife is rather Type-III (but not prohibitively so), since quite often replicator + debris creates enough chaos to produce additional replicators, which then consume the universe in a conflagration of expanding replicator-mess.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Oh, yes, the B38/S23 glider gun does occur naturally -- it's called yl106_1_5_f4842a91ffb658737af39134e4680190 and was found near the end of a 1000000-soup run I did just now:

I'm thinking of adding support for generating soups with a particular symmetry type, similar to RandomAgar but without the 'agar'. The reason I hadn't implemented this feature initially was that apgsearch was originally never intended to search for new objects, but rather to function as an efficient census tool for B3/S23 (and even then only to be used as a subcomponent of a GoL-based cryptocurrency).

Awesome. You may want to change linearlyse(1000) to linearlyse(2000) so as to catch the p1240 puffer instead of identifying it merely as 'PATHOLOGICAL'. I think that the wickstretcher should be identified properly (can you confirm?), although instances of the 'same' wickstretcher with different backends may end up with different representations. (This is a feature, not a bug!)

I think it only identifies different back ends to wickstretchers if they're periodic and the periodic end affects the overall population growth a bit, for example in 2x2 the wickstretchers in the top row are all counted as the same thing, but the other three are all classed as unique (actually, I think any other P2 with a one-cell on/off rotor would be grouped in together with that P2 end).
I've not yet seen an object where two wickstretchers stretch the same object in two directions, but I assume that would be classed as unique too.

Hmm... My pattern is indeed an explicit breeder.
However, the breeder takes approximately 50K generations to start, so I suggest you to remove useless chunks of the pattern, (notably the four first puffers, after which breeding stops for a while) to see the whole pattern. But yes, a beefy computer is necessary.

As you can see, the pattern starts producing new twin b puffers (TBP?) in a regular pasis.New TBPs may be produced in a chaotic way, but the triangle of TBP will always grow.
Besides, the puffer is rather stable on it's own in term of damage, as it spontaneously regenerates in the first pattern I posted.

On the other hand, the Staircase hex is a chaos mass capable of creating new TBP on a widely irregular basis. However, interactions between 4 TBPs may eventually lead to the creation of the whole breeder. But if this is considered a breeder, what isn't?

P.S. It's population can really be made smaller. Feel free to do so.

P.P.S. New pattern? New name! How about the dry mosquito (in reference to Life's small breeder)?

Thanks; the latest (96-cell) version is much more satisfying, although it does still have some expanding mess (which could theoretically ignite the trail of the breeder, catch up and destroy it -- but this is incredibly unlikely!).

I wonder how rare twin bees puffers are. Theoretically, apgsearch would call them yl480_1_1066_92975842880b54fdb00ae29ba7afed4a (I have linearlyse as a standalone script for naming linear-growth patterns), but of course B37/S23 is too explosive to be searched.

B37/S23 also has a 9c/28 'twin arrs puffer' yl28_1_16_901513b1a1a779257c4f9e2ed6354220 with a much tamer exhaust:

Well, now my 96-cell pattern's record is shattered.
By the way, you have your answer, with this 9-cell predecessor I found by looking the way they are formed.
But now, we are stuck: we'd have to find an even better predecessor, and given that TBPs are still relatively rare, this is probably mission impossible.

I don't know if anyone else has found this but there are a lot of oscillators in LifeHistory that use the killer cell.

A small oscillator is capable to eat this gun's enterprises in Morley. However, the oscillator becomes a p2, which becomes a p4 again after another collision. Wha pakes this eating reaction unique is that the oscillator doesn't only changes it's shape, it changes it's period. Yet stands still.
